This helps children focus on each shape's defining characteristics. Shapes can be put together (composed) and separated (decomposed) to make new shapes. For example, you can put together two right triangles to make a rectangle. Children should have practice combining, rotating, and comparing shapes so that they learn the part/whole relationship among shapes. Here are some tips for engaging children in the shape tracing activities in this learning book: Name the shape. Ask, "Do you know what this shape is called? If we turn the shape around like this, will it still be a (triangle, square, etc.)?" Describe their characteristics. Ask, "How many sides does this shape have? How many corners does it have? Let's count the number of sides and corners!" Discuss the similarities and differences between shapes. Ask, "How are these two shapes similar? How are they different?" Notice how you can put shapes together to make new shapes. Ask, "When we put these two shapes together, what shape do we make?" Notice how you can take shapes apart. Ask, "When we cut this shape in half, what two shapes do we make?" Children can make their own shape animals!After tracing the shapes, children color and draw the animals.
