Excerpt from Letters, Archaeological and Historical, Vol. 2: Relating to the Isle of Wight James made himself their patron, and that they became his allies and servile worshippers. The first were the bishops and dignified clergy of the English Church. They had trembled at his Presbyterian education and oath, and at his Roman Catholic mother. To find him renouncing the first with a sincere and passionate loathing and also to find him proving the Pope to be Antichrist in his books, and at last, after the Gunpowder Plot, prepared heartily to persecute the Pope's adherents - this was a surprise and a triumph, which might easily turn the heads of well-disposed men, convinced that they were maintaining the true line of peace and moder ation against enemies on both sides. They paid dearly for their partisanship, and left a fatal legacy for ages to come, by inducing the English people to believe that the cause of the Church and the cause of freedom were hostile causes.
