The letters’ main purpose is to send a simple message: no one idea or person holds the ultimate truth. Truth, as portrayed by politicians and the clergy, as a path to follow, to die or kill for, is not truth. It is a means to an end—their means and their end. On their path the individual becomes a helpless tool. It is this individual for whom Letters to Dalia is written. This individual can be anyone.

I want to reach out to a global audience by conveying messages of hope and peace that can be shared all over the world. This book explores the civil war in Lebanon and the abuse of religion and ideology; it is a journey inside the Arab mind and aims to develop the potential of future generations. My goal is to reach an international audience that shares the same concerns of people living in the Middle Eastùthat strictly following any leader or ideology and opinion without reservations will be detrimental to the future of our planet. Our sons and daughters are at risk of being swayed by ideologues and religious zealots. Truth and knowledge seeking are my quest for Dalia, the figure who represents the new generation. Dalia must find truth. Simply listening to speeches and being carried away by demagogues is futile and can lead only to self-destruction. Misunderstanding historical reality will lead old and young alike away from truth and understanding. Letters to Dalia carries additional messages aside from truth seeking: tolerance, co-existence, and above all, the importance of being a good human being. As altruistic as this might sound, I dread the thought of a future generation, represented by Dalia, that is willing to harm or be harmed in the name of slogans, instead of cultivating meaningful ideas and values. Dalia represents a global generation that needs to preserve its mental and spiritual beliefs in order to preserve us all. Dalia will find her path and will lead others into a better future.
