Winner of the 2016 International Dublin Literary Award "Gorgeously tender at its core…beautiful, heartstopping…Family Life really blazes." —Sonali Deraniyagala, New York Times Book Review Hailed as a "supreme storyteller" (Philadelphia Inquirer) for his "cunning, dismaying and beautifully conceived" fiction (New York Times), Akhil Sharma is possessed of a narrative voice "as hypnotic as those found in the pages of Dostoyevsky" (The Nation). In his highly anticipated second novel, Family Life, he delivers a story of astonishing intensity and emotional precision. We meet the Mishra family in Delhi in 1978, where eight-year-old Ajay and his older brother Birju play cricket in the streets, waiting for the day when their plane tickets will arrive and they and their mother can fly across the world and join their father in America. America to the Mishras is, indeed, everything they could have imagined and more: when automatic glass doors open before them, they feel that surely they must have been mistaken for somebody important. Pressing an elevator button and the elevator closing its doors and rising, they have a feeling of power at the fact that the elevator is obeying them. Life is extraordinary until tragedy strikes, leaving one brother severely brain-damaged and the other lost and virtually orphaned in a strange land. Ajay, the family’s younger son, prays to a God he envisions as Superman, longing to find his place amid the ruins of his family’s new life. Heart-wrenching and darkly funny, Family Life is a universal story of a boy torn between duty and his own survival.

If you have ever wondered what it was like to grow up and work on a cotton farm during the 1950's you need to read this book. It tells about the trials and tribulations of survival while growing up in a large family and only making two dollars each day for working from daylight to dark. While I wasn't ashamed of my roots I wanted a better life for my family. I knew at an early age that education was the key to unlocking many doors and I only completed the fifth grade. After obtaining my (G.E.D) General Education Diploma I went to work as a Patrolman for the Lonoke Police Department in July of 1971. I immediately knew that I had found my niche in life and wanted to make a career out of it. Four months later I applied for and was accepted as a Patrolman for the North Little Rock Police Department. In 1973 I was approached about going to work for the Arkansas State Police and was sworn as a Trooper on October 7, 1973. I was promoted to Sergeant on November 23, 1984 and to Lieutenant on June 17, 1988. For the next six years I was the assistant commander in Troop's B, F, and E. in March of 1995 I transferred to Troop J in Clarksville. A short time later I enrolled in a correspondence course at one of the local Universities and eventually obtained a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice. I completed thirty years of service to the state of Arkansas in October of 2003, and retired on April 30, 2004. This book reveals a life of hard work, honesty and integrity. It deals with education, courtship, love, marriage and the death of a child. You will laugh and cry as you read about the antics of growing up in a large family. It is both sad and funny but the message is simple: Put God first, family second, and everything else, well, you know the rest. I have also written a book of poetry entitles "Southern Charm´ and a seventy year history book entitled "Arkansas State Troopers" I believe that you will enjoy reading all of these books.

As cooking unlocked the memories of her rough-and-tumble childhood and the loss and heartbreak that came with it, Martin became more determined than ever to find peace and elevate her life through the prism of food and world cultures. From the tiny, makeshift kitchen of her eccentric, creative mother, to a string of foster homes, to the house from which she launches her own cooking adventure, Marin's heartfelt, brutally honest memoir reveals the power of cooking to bond, to empower, and to heal--and celebrates the simple truth that happiness is created from within"--

"Cute and familiar." - Kirkus From New York Times Best-Selling illustrator, Kathryn Durst, and Penguin Workshop editors and authors, Renee Hooker and Karl Jones, comes a tale of a young girl who imagines her family as a pandemonium of parrots, a swarm of bees, a smack of jellyfish, a wisdom of wombats, and more! When a young girl gets frustrated with her chaotic life at home, she imagines what things would be like if her family were animals instead. Would life be better as a pod of pelicans, a pride of lions, or a herd of buffalo? Or is it ultimately a family of humans that she needs? In this beautifully illustrated book, young readers learn the names for groups of animals through a sweet, whimsical narrative that focuses on the importance of family.

A Regency time-travel romance in which a modern-day Austenite's ultimate dream comes true when she lands in the arms of a Regency duke, only to learn some fantasies aren't all they're cracked up to be when he proves less than a Prince Charming... "Literary magic takes widowed Jane Austen fan Eliza James to Regency England for a chance to win the heart of the likewise-bereaved Deveric Mattersley, Duke of Claremont, in this charming time-travel romance. Despite the unlikely premise, the unforced unfolding of this magically-created romance is refreshing...the author has effectively captured the emotional essence of a historical romance and created an engaging love story that will leave readers eager for more of the series." - Publishers Weekly BookLife "A Matter of Time should be on every fantasy, paranormal, contemporary and Regency romance reader's "to read" list...I would definitely recommend this novel - you will be charmed, captivated, have a few good laughs and shed a few tears as you cheer Eliza and Dev on to find their happy every after ending." - Marsha, KeeperBookshelf.com "I fell in love with this book, just as I did with the Jane Austen classics. There's a new Mr. Darcy in town." - Annie, ARC reader, reviewer for The Write Review and ChickLitPlus.com _________________________________________________________________________ Can a man with a past and a woman from the future forge a love for all time? Nobody would blame widowed doctoral student Eliza James for giving up on Happily Ever After; at twenty-nine, she's suffered more loss than most people do in a lifetime. But Eliza's convinced her own hero is still out there, waiting for her, just like in the beloved romance novels she devours. Every Jane Austen-loving girl deserves a Darcy, right? Only Eliza doesn't dream of a modern-day affair: she wants the whole Regency experience. When a magical manuscript thrusts her back two hundred years into the arms and life of one Deveric Mattersley, Duke of Claremont, however, Eliza realizes some fantasies aren't all they're cracked up to be, especially when her duke proves himself less than a Prince Charming. Convinced he's at fault for the death of his wife, Deveric Mattersley has no interest in women, much less marriage. Determined to atone for his sins, he decrees himself content to focus on running his family's estates, and on raising his son-until the mysterious Mrs. James appears. Who is she? What does she want? And why does she make Dev's blood run hot in a way no woman ever has? A charming time-travel Regency romance full of wit and humor, A Matter of Time reminds us that, like books, you can't judge people by their covers, and that love often comes when least expected. _________________________________________________________________________ 2016 HOLT Medallion Certificate of Merit winner for Best Paranormal and Best Book by a Virginia Author 2016 RONE Finalist for Best Paranormal Genre: Regency time travel Magic of Love Book 2: 365 pages

This book captures the essence of modern family life. Much has changed since our own childhoods; the good old days. Todays parents are challenged by the need to invent their own parenting style. This can only happen from within, based on our personal values and boundaries. Jesper Juul puts it very clearly: The love we feel for our children and our partners does not in itself have any value. It has no value at all until it is converted into loving behavior. Each chapter focuses on the values that form a solid platform on which to build a family: Equal dignity, Integrity, Authenticity and Responsibility. This makes family life more meaningful and parents avoid living frantically from conflict to conflict, desperately searching for quick solutions and trying to adapt to the most popular parenting technique of the day. A book full of everyday examples and practical ideas.
