Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: And the Abolition of Slavery in the United States It is of course impossible to give within the limits of a small book all the details of a busy life, and also the history of the American Emancipation and its causes but I trust that I have omitted little of much' importance. The books to which I have been chiefly indebted, and from which I have borrowed most freely, are the lives of Lincoln by W. H. Lamon, and by my personal friends H. J. Raymond and Dr. Holland and also the works referring to the war by I. N. Arnold, F. B. Carpenter, L. P. Brockett, A. In regard to the truthfulness and impartiality of the work, the author will only say that, while acknowledging frankly that all his convictions and sympathies have been with the cause of liberty and loyalty, he has not, consciously, done injustice to any. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln His idea of paying the South for the slaves did not by any means originate with the pro posal he was prepared to make at Fortress Monroe. It had been all along in his mind. He believed the North equally guilty with the South for the existence of slavery. He clearly understood that the irrepressible conflict was a conflict of systems, not merely a sectional and partisan quarrel. He was a considerate man, abhorring proscription. He wanted to leave the South no right to claim that the North, finding slave-labor unremunerative, had sold its negroes to the South and then turned about and by force of arms confiscated what it had unloaded at a profit. He recog nized slavery as property. In his message to Congress of December, 1862, he proposed payment for-the slaves, elaborating a scheme in detail and urging it with copious and co gent argument. The people of the South, said he, addressing a war Congress at that moment in the throes of bloody strife with the South, are not more responsible for the original introduction of this property than are the people of the North, and, when it is re membered how unhesitatingly We all use cot ton and sugar and share the profits of dealing in them, it may not be quite safe to say that the' South has been more responsible than the North for its continuance. This is the language not only of justice, but of far-reaching statesmanship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Man Who, Freed the Slaves, the Story of Abraham Lincoln For nearly three hundred years after the discovery of America the interior of the country remained practically unknown. Beyond the Alleghany Mountains all was wilderness, hostile savages, and wild beasts. Gradually, however, as fresh arrivals came into the settlements the older colonists began to feel themselves, "crowded," as they said, so, packing up their belongings, they set off westward to seek some spot where they could "breathe." These hardy pioneers did much to open up the interior of the North American continent - more perhaps than any amount of organised exploration could have accomplished.
