The story of the civil rights movement is well-known, popularized by both the media and the academy. Yet the version of the story recounted time and again by both history books and PBS documentaries is a simplified one, reduced to an inspirational but ultimately facile narrative framed around Dr. King, the Kennedys, and the redemptive days of Montgomery and Memphis, in which black individuals become the rescued survivors. This story renders the mass of black people invisible, refusing to take seriously everyday people whose years of persistent struggle often made the big events possible. Time Longer than Rope unearths the ordinary roots of extraordinary change, demonstrating the depth and breadth of black oppositional spirit and activity that preceded the civil rights movement. The diversity of activism covered by this collection extends from tenant farmers' labor reform campaign in the 1919 Elaine, Arkansas massacre to Harry T. Moore’s leadership of a movement that registered 100,000 black Floridians years before Montgomery, and from women's participation in the Garvey movement to the changing meaning of the Lincoln Memorial. Concentrating on activist efforts in the South, key themes emerge, including the under appreciated importance of historical memory and community building, the divisive impact of class and sexism, and the shifting interplay between individual initiative and structural constraints. More than simply illuminating a hitherto marginalized fragment of American history, Time Longer than Rope provides a crucial pre-history of the modern civil rights movement. In the process, it alters our entire understanding of African American activism and the very meaning of “civil rights.”

Our contemporary horror stories are written in a world where there seems little faith, lost hope, and no salvation. All that remains is the fragmentary and occasionally lyrical testimony of the human being struggling to confront its lack of reason for being in the vast cosmos. This is the terrain of the horror genre. Eugene Thacker explores this situation in Tentacles Longer Than Night. Extending the ideas presented in his book In The Dust of This Planet, Thacker considers the relationship between philosophy and the horror genre. But instead of taking fiction as the mere illustration of ideas, Thacker reads horror stories as if they themselves were works of philosophy, driven by a speculative urge to question human knowledge and the human-centric view of the world, ultimately leading to the limit of the human - thought undermining itself, in thought. Tentacles Longer Than Night is the third volume of the "horror of philosophy" trilogy, together with the first volume, In The Dust of This Planet, and the second volume, Starry Speculative Corpse.

Unplug the clock. Turn off the television. Put a stack of John Hartford albums on the stereo. Sit back and take a trip to the hills of eastern Kentucky. Come meet other real people among the hills, but dont expect to see any stereotypes of hillbillies or moonshine stills. His tribute to these gentle people is, in the best sense, poetic. His writing flows like a creek running down the piney mountains. Royce has given the world an impressive record of one of the last remnants of American culture still uncontaminated by a plastic mentality. It is hoped this warm and beautiful book will not be an epitaph to the mountain culture, but the start of the renaissance of their natural lifestyle. -Greg Bailey, Columbia Missourian Country Miles are Longer than City Miles, a sort of Kentucky Foxfire that examines with reverence about 20 of the states artisans and their work. Royces book is a genuine artcraft of its own kind, a lovingly carved little piece of work that exudes vibrant enthusiasm from every page. It is good to see ourselves as others see us. In this case, it can bring us back to some sense of ourselves. Commitment to excellence is a rare enough quality in most any human undertaking, and it is this quality that Craig Evan Royce is concerned with in Country Miles are Longer than City Miles. -Review by Don Edwards Herald-Leader Literary Columnist The Lexington Herald-Leader This is a craft book of a different genre. It is the story of the inseparable love that the true craftsman has for his work - and his respect for nature. Each chapter opens with a sepia photo - and every priceless photo tells a story. Interviews with the individual craft folk are written in dialect - and the first-hand mountain memoirs are indeed moving and enlightening simultaneously. Author Royce has compiled a unique and inspiring glimpse into the art of the southern highlands from which all who read, be they craftsmen or not, can benefit. -edited by Susan Bruno, The NEWPORT NEWS DAILY PRESS
