LOVERS AND MADMEN: A TRUE STORY OF PASSION, POLITICS, AND AIR PIRACY is dominated by two central themes: politics and love. Julienne Busic's memoirs take the reader through the events that shaped her life with Croatian dissident husband, Zvonko-assassination attempts, threats from the Yugoslav secret police, flights from country to country, enforced poverty and deprivation-and characterize the love that led to the greatest sacrifice of all: a sentence of life in prison for the political hijacking of a TWA jet. Less than twenty years after the Busics' desperate act, Yugoslavia broke apart in a spasm of war, and Croatia is now an independent state. The message contained in the leaflets thrown during the hijacking served as a prophecy of this disintegration and the vicious Serbian aggression, first in Croatia and Bosnia, and most recently in Albanian-populated Kosovo. Zvonko and Julienne Busic received mandatory life sentences (with parole eligibility recommended by the judge after ten years for Zvonko, and eight years for Julienne). Julienne served thirteen years in prison and was released on parole in 1989. Zvonko remained in prison until he was released in June 2009, almost thirty-two years later, from a high security unit in Terre Haute, Indiana. Mad Men Carousel is an episode-by-episode guide to all seven seasons of AMC's Mad Men. This book collects TV and movie critic Matt Zoller Seitz’s celebrated Mad Men recaps—as featured on New York magazine's Vulture blog—for the first time, including never-before-published essays on the show’s first three seasons. Seitz’s writing digs deep into the show’s themes, performances, and filmmaking, examining complex and sometimes confounding aspects of the series. The complete series—all seven seasons and ninety-two episodes—is covered. Each episode review also includes brief explanations of locations, events, consumer products, and scientific advancements that are important to the characters, such as P.J. Clarke’s restaurant and the old Penn Station; the inventions of the birth control pill, the Xerox machine, and the Apollo Lunar Module; the release of the Beatles’ Revolver and the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds; and all the wars, protests, assassinations, and murders that cast a bloody pall over a chaotic decade. Mad Men Carousel is named after an iconic moment from the show’s first-season finale, “The Wheel,â€? wherein Don delivers an unforgettable pitch for a new slide projector that’s centered on the idea of nostalgia: “the pain from an old wound.â€? This book will soothe the most ardent Mad Men fan’s nostalgia for the show. New viewers, who will want to binge-watch their way through one of the most popular TV shows in recent memory, will discover a spoiler-friendly companion to one of the most multilayered and mercurial TV shows of all time. It's the perfect gift for Mad Men fans and obsessives. Also available from Matt Zoller Seitz: The Oliver Stone Experience, The Wes Anderson Collection: Bad Dads, The Wes Anderson Collection: The Grand Budapest Hotel, and The Wes Anderson Collection.

"You're not a misfit. You're a fine human being. I can see it in your eyes."The boundary between love and insanity is as thin as a paper cut and just as uncomfortable for the members of a Not-So-Traditional American family forging their way through small town life and relationships in the early 1970s.Seventeen year old Beverly Patterson is discovering that her amorous adventures with Warren, her long-term boyfriend of six weeks, aren't quite like anything she's ever read about in magazines or learned from the whispered conversations with her friends in the high school cafeteria. Her parents are still in the process of nailing down their own roles after twenty years of marriage, and her younger siblings Kevin and Mindy were obviously created with the express purpose of ruining her life. When you throw in an addled grandmother in a turbocharged red Camaro who finds what just might pass for love in a most unusual package, plus a world full of mad dogs, bad friends and constantly feuding neighbors, it's certain to be a long, strange ride.

From Jeff VanderMeer, the author of Borne and Annihilation, comes the paperback reissue of his cult classic City of Saints and Madmen. In this reinvention of the literature of the fantastic, you hold in your hands an invitation to a place unlike any you’ve ever visited—an invitation delivered by one of our most audacious and astonishing literary magicians. City of elegance and squalor. Of religious fervor and wanton lusts. And everywhere, on the walls of courtyards and churches, an incandescent fungus of mysterious and ominous origin. In Ambergris, a would-be suitor discovers that a sunlit street can become a killing ground in the blink of an eye. An artist receives an invitation to a beheading—and finds himself enchanted. And a patient in a mental institution is convinced that he’s made up a city called Ambergris, imagined its every last detail, and that he’s really from a place called Chicago . . . By turns sensuous and terrifying, filled with exotica and eroticism, this interwoven collection of stories, histories, and “eyewitness” reports invokes a universe within a puzzle box where you can lose—and find—yourself again.
