Excerpt from Main-Stem and Tributary Sampling of Red Salmon Scales for Population Studies This paper compares scale samples collected both in the trunk river and on spawning grounds in the Kvichak River system during the 1956 to 1958 field seasons. Because resorption erodes much of the peripheral part of scales of fish on the spawning ground, leaving only the central portion legible, comparison is confined to freshwater age composition. Ecological studies on the fresh-water phases of the life history of sockeye salmon and studies on related limnology and climatology were made at Brooks Lake, Alaska, in 1957. Data are presented and interpreted on adult sockeye salmon spawning distributions and behavior, age, sex, length, fecundity, and bear predation; on juvenile sockeye salmon ages, food, growth, migration from the lake, relative abundance, and distribution in the lake; and on climatological and limnological factors that may influence sockeye salmon behavior and abundance.

Abstract: The micro method of hematocrit is rapidly replacing red cell counts in clinical hematology. Observations were made on the value of this method in routine hematological examination of trouts. Under the conditions of data collection, the normal hematocrit values for brook trout were 45 to 50, for brown trout 39 to 44, and for rainbow trout 45 to 53. There was a close correlation between the hematocrits, red cell counts and hemoglobin. The commercial heparinized capillaries, while excellent for human blood, tend to give somewhat higher readings (7 to 18 percent) with trout, due to incomplete prevention of blood coagulation. The procedure as applied to trout is described in detail.
