Excerpt from Fossil Marine Mammals From the Miocene Calvert Formation of Maryland and Virginia The scientific publications of the United States National Museum include two series, Proceedings of the United States National Museum and United States National Museum Bulletin. In these series are published original articles and monographs dealing with the collections and work of the Museum and setting forth newly acquired facts in the fields of anthropology, biology, geology, history, and technology. Copies of each publication are distributed to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the various subjects. The Proceedings, begun in 1878, are intended for the publication, in separate form, of shorter papers. These are gathered in volumes, octavo in size, with the publication date of each paper recorded in the table of contents of the volume. In the Bulletin series, the first of which was issued in 1875, appear longer, separate publications consisting of monographs (occasionally in several parts) and volumes in which are collected works on related subjects. Bulletins are either octavo or quarto in size, depending on the needs of the presentation. Since 1902, papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum have been published in the Bulletin series under the heading Contributions from the United States National Herbarium. Excerpt from Notes on the Mammals of the Lake Maxinkuckee Region The northward movement of the Opossum seems to have been general over the state. They are occasionally taken in Marshall and adjoining counties. They are frequently seen at Fort Wayne, Indiana, a few being captured every winter. Mr. J. J. Hildebrandt, of Logansport, reported that some one had brought him about October 1, 1904, an old Opossum and 12 young, the latter about two-thirds as large as rats. The first night she killed 9 of them. He kept the other three and the mother for about 3 weeks, when he took them to the woods and turned them loose. Devouring its young in captivity seems to be a common habit of the Opossum, and almost everyone who has tried to keep them together has had the young destroyed by the mother. The Opossum is usually caught in this region for its fur. The prices now obtained by the trappers are 15 to 2 5 cents. The pelts are becoming more valuable every year, the prices brought in the London market in 1910 for prime skins ranging from 45 cents to $1. The food of the Opossum is chie y insects, though they are also fond of pawpaws. They also feed to some extent upon the mussels which they find in the lake. They are an innocent, harmless animal and should be protected. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Geographical History of Mammals Since the publication of Dr Wallace's book on the geographical distribution of animals in general, the only works which have appeared relating to Mammals from the same point of view are the small volume by Mr F. E. Beddard, and the series of papers by Mr W. L. Sclater, referred to in the Appendix. Both the latter admittedly take but little account of fossil forms and there is accordingly ample room for a work which? should collect and arrange the information on this subject, and it indicate the deductions which may be drawn therefrom. This task has been attempted in the present volume. The subject is, however, so vast, and the information relating to it scattered! through so many publications, that it is probable many points of interest or importance have not been noticed. From the mode. of arrangement of the work, a considerable amount of repetition was inevitable. The long time that the volume was in the press will account for its containing no allusion to certain papers which have appeared recently. It may therefore be mentioned here that recent discoveries have shown a slight intermixture of northern. types in the Palaeozoic flora of Argentina, so that the isolation of the northern and southern floras is not so nearly complete as was supposed.
