Excerpt from A Manual of Natural Therapy Some ten years ago the author conceived the idea of writing a book of this character. A commencement was then made, but owing to an unexpected change of environment and other circumstances, it was not proceeded with. During the past decade great progress has been made in methods of natural therapy, and particularly in the department of electrical treatment and electro-thermal methods. The author feels that the time has now arrived when there is a distinct want for a book on "Natural Therapy" in this country, and he ventures to hope that it may be welcomed by the medical profession. In the preparation of the work no attempt has been made to give a complete or exhaustive account of any of the departments dealt with, but the author has endeavoured to embody the chief points of interest and importance, briefly and succinctly, in such a manner as to awaken interest, and lead to further study and consideration of the methods treated of on the part of the reader. A bibliography has been added at the end of the book, and to the authors of many of the volumes therein mentioned the author herewith gratefully acknowledges his obligations. Throughout the text, footnotes, marginal references, and acknowledgments have been intentionally avoided, as embarrassing to the reader when frequently employed. The name of an authority is frequently mentioned in brackets. In the section on hydrotherapeutics it is difficult to mention any ascertained physiological fact which we do not owe to the work of Winternitz or Kellogg, and their names occur frequently. The encouragement extended to the author on all hands when help in the production of the book was solicited has been most gratifying. Natural Therapy: A Manual of Physiotherapeutics and Climatology discusses natural ways of healing and treating certain diseases and disorders. The authors discuss the use of water in bath-treatments as used by John Smedley, Winternitz, or through methods known as "Kaltwasser Kuranstalten," or "Kneipp cure." The book explains the general principles of hydrotherapy or the systematic application of water at different temperatures in varying ways to the body surface. Water can have a therapeutic effect due to its temperature, volume, mechanical means, and chemical forms. The authors also discuss taking baths including general precautions (after physical exertion), techniques (arm, foot bath), use of drip sheet, and douches. Water in Nauheim baths are either naturally or artificial charged, in varying degrees, with carbonic acid gas, and mixed with small amounts of chloride and sulphate of soda. The bath is good for the circulatory system. The authors discuss other natural methods of treatment such as steam bath, massages, hydro-electric baths, and special diet cures. This book can be helpful for care givers, health workers, physical therapists, practioners of alternative or holistic medicine, and general readers who have an interest in natural treatment and healing.
