Excerpt from Material for Practical German Conversation The volume herewith submitted to my fellow-teachers and their classes in German Conversation differs more or less from other text-books on that subject hitherto within easy reach. It is not a book for beginners, nor even for second-year students. It presupposes a certain degree of proficiency in reading the language, a proficiency measured by the ability to read with profit books such as Schiller's or Maria Stuart, Goethe's flermamz um! Dorot/zea, Suder mann's Frau Sarge, or texts equally difficult. It assumes further that the learner wishes more than a collection of phrases pertaining to steamboats, ticket offices, and hotel accommodations, and, finally, that a review of the main points of grammar, in connection with the lessons, will be welcomed by both teacher and taught. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Excerpt from Materials for German Conversation: With Notes and Vocabulary In selecting stories that were to form the basis of con versation between teacher and pupil, it was felt that they should in the first place be interesting in themselves. They should also readily lend themselves to reproduction on the part of the pupil, and the vocabulary should be representa tive of the real - the pupil's own - world, rather than that of thought and feeling. These considerations have determined both the character of the selections and their individual treatment. Description and all detailed setting have therefore been eliminated in favor of action and in cident. The editor has also aimed at introducing the pupil to only a limited German vocabulary. In accordance with this principle important words and phrases once used, have been repeated in subsequent selections, as well as in different portions of the same selection. Intensiveness, not extensiveness of knowledge has been the goal. Only by such steps can the pupil gain a sure footing and develop an accurate feeling for a foreign language. The questions appended to each story do not lay claim to exhaustiveness. They have been so framed that the answers can be constructed by the student without aid. Other than that derived from text, notes and vocabulary. While the later selections are covered somewhat less fully. Excerpt from The Germans at Home: A Practical Introduction to German Conversation, With an Appendix Containing, the Essentials of German Grammar In the preparation of the series of books for the study of the German language, of which this little work forms the first volume, I have been guided by the Principles of Imitation and Variation; for I hold that these are the only principles by which a modem language can be learnt rationally. Just as a child begins to speak its native tongue without knowing anything about the mechanism of the grammar of the language, simply by Imitation, so also a beginner should begin a modem language, simply by listening to the foreign sounds and then imitating them, after a due explanation of the sentence heard. The second process should be Variation of the material thus gathered by listening and imitating. After having acquired a certain familiarity with the language, its pronunciation and construction, the laws of the language may be gradually developed. Composition, however, should not begin till the student has made himself sufficiently acquainted with the genius and the idiomatic peculiarities of the language to apply them freely and fluently in his composition. How often do we not hear that pupils, after studying German for a period of about three or four years, have acquired not very much more than a knowledge of a few grammatical rules and inflections, together with a limited power of understanding a German book or a passage taken from a German newspaper. If called upon to translate a passage from an English writer (or merely a short colloquial phrase of everyday occurrence) idiomatically and correctly, they are, for the most part, entirely at a loss to solve the problem; and if required to enter upon a conversation in German, they will almost invariably be found unable to do so. Excerpt from Practical Lessons in German Conversation: A Companion to All German Grammars, and a Manual for Candidates for the Civil and Military Service Examinations The ultimate object of learning a living language is to be able to speak it. In this all are agreed. But how to attain so desirable an object, is to many people as yet a much debated question. There are still many people who fancy that a knowledge of a modern language is most easily "picked up" by a short residence abroad. This is a strange delusion. Surely, it is easier to get your grammar ready-made than to construct it for yourself out of a mass of heterogeneous material, regular and irregular, correct and incorrect, presented all at the same time. For my own part, I have never known a person who, in this manner, had acquired a correct knowledge of any modern language. But I have known many who had acquired a slovenly manner of thinking and speaking, and who had become utterly indifferent to grammatical correctness. A residence abroad is, no doubt, desirable, but requires, at all times, to be supplemented by careful and unremitting study. First, there is the great difficulty of understanding the words spoken by others, and then the difficulty of expressing one's own thoughts and feelings in the same way as foreigners do. In learning our native language we learn first the spoken language, and then the written language. But both must be learned. The order is inverted when we learn a foreign language.
