This memorandum deals with the use of liquid metals in advanced spacepower plants. The principal liquid-metal candidates for such applications are mercury, NaK, potassium, lithium, cesium, and sodium. These metals are used primarily as heat-transfer media and as working fluids at high temperatures. This memorandum identifies specific areas for molten metal use and discusses the materials, problems, and developments associated with their containment. (Author).

In this memorandum, the available reports in DMIC which are concerned with welding of metal surfaces in space environments, whether this welding is desirable or undesirable, are reviewed. The phenomenon of surface welding in the space environment is of interest to many for various reasons. Some hope to use the phenomenon for the completion of attachment joints or repairs to spacecraft. Some are concerned because of the possible malfunction of moving components such as bearings, valves, and electrical contacts. However, no effort has been made to correlate and analyze the data that are presented. A section on fundamental studies also is included, along with an annotated bibliography which covers references dealing primarily with lubricants, lubrication, coatings, and test equipment.

The introductory sections contain a brief discussion of the general methods of producing fiber-reinforced composites and of the theory of fiber-reinforcement of metals. The body of the report describes research on fiber-reinforced metal matrix composites, and is organized according to metal matrix materials. For convenience, the report is divided into two sections: Low density matrices (including aluminum, magnesium, and titanium and their alloys) and high density matrices (cobalt, copper and its alloys, iron, lead-tin alloys, nickel and nickel alloys, silver, tantalum, and tungsten). (Author).

Experimental programs concerned with the oxidation of titanium and its alloys are reviewed and results compared with those predicted by theory. Wagner-Hauffe theory is used as the primary basis for comparison, and its inconsistencies are pointed out. Fifteen binary alloy systems involving titanium are covered, as well as a few ternary and commercial alloys. A short section discusses the effects of oxygen or nitrogen contamination on the mechanical properties of titanium and its alloys. (Author).
