As early as 1814, though they had been observed previously, fraunhofer studied the dark lines in the solar spectrum to which his name has been given; but it was not until 1859, when kirchoff made his great discovery of the reversal of the spectrum, that their nature and origin became known, and Spectrum Analysis burst into a science, the connecting link between Chemistry and Astronomy.
