Austerity, fiscal consolidation, fiscal discipline and fiscal deficit targets have become the buzzwords of contemporary macroeconomic policy. By tracing the history of macroeconomic schools of thought, Maximum Government, Maximum Governance explores the origins, essence, shortcomings and deception of mainstream neoliberal macroeconomics. Arguing that economies are financially constrained, neoliberal macroeconomics dislodged full employment as the target of policy replacing it with a low and stable inflation target. Monetary policy under the control of an independent central bank became the primary instrument to assist free and globalized markets to propel economies towards full employment. However, the global financial crisis of 2008 and rising inequalities of income and wealth in the last decade within and across economies has led to rise of nationalist-populist leaders in many parts of the world. Although neoliberal economics has been put under the scanner by these leaders, their actions seem reactionary and without a coherent understanding of alternative schools of economic thought. An alternative based on sound economic reasoning and institutional realities is required to challenge neoliberal and arbitrary populist policies. Based on an introductory analysis of Modern Money Theory (MMT), this book seeks to present an alternative viewpoint on macroeconomics and macroeconomic policy to address the challenges of economic growth, unemployment and inequality. While adherents of MMT are convinced of its robustness, the challenge is to reframe macroeconomic discourse, which must essentially reject the notion that an economy is financially constrained and instead turn the spotlight on real resource and governance constraints. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

Narendra Damodardas Modi stands for hope. Hope for billions of Indians. Love him, Hate him, NaMo is India’s last chance. His story fascinates almost every community in India and many abroad. His ever growing huge fan following has made him the most-searched political personality on Google in 2014. While several books have already been written about the Man, very few have been written about him by a “true- fan”, one of several Millions across the world. This honest endeavor written in totally “non-controversial” style, on his struggle of early years, rise as a CM of Gujarat and his stupendous success over a 13 year stint, his magnanimous election campaign to lead India to an almost single handedly historic verdict to his becoming India’s fifteenth Prime Minister is purely directed at his fans to enjoy the wonderful moments of their truest Leader. His rise hasn’t been a fairy tale story to say the least. It’s been an uphill struggle, battling his way to the top, fighting several battles both within and outside including his media ‘love-hate’ in India and abroad. NaMo has only one way forward, to take India to a glorious future and convert his multi Trillion-dollar dream of India into a reality. The book contains an interesting foreward by Shantanu Guha Ray, a Wharton-trained business journalist who scooped the Coal Scam in 2011 and won many national and international awards for a series of investigations. A unique Chapter on Shri Modi’s visit to Siachen with some “rarely-seen” visuals will form part of the Visual Delight for all and one. Several images of Shri Modi have been included in the Book. Enjoy reading “NaMo A Name, A Cult. A Visual Delight”.

The Western liberal democratic world order, which seemingly triumphed following the collapse of communism, is looking increasingly fragile as populists and nationalists take power in the United States, Europe and elsewhere, as the momentum of democratization in developing countries stalls, and as Western liberal establishments fail to deal with economic stagnation, worsening political polarization, social inequality, and migrant crises. At the same time there is a shift of economic power from the West towards Asia. This book explores these critical developments and their consequences for the world order. It considers how far the loss of the West’s power to dominate the world order, together with the relative decline of US power and its abdication of its global leadership role, will lead to more conflict, disorder and chaos; and how far non-Western actors, including China, India and the Muslim world, are capable of establishing visionary policy initiatives which reconfigure the paths and rules of economic integration and globalization, and the mechanisms of global governance. The book also assesses the sustainability of the economic rise of China and other non-Western actors, explores the Western liberal democratic order’s capacity for resilience, and discusses how far the outlook is pessimistic or optimistic.
