Subaltern studies, the study of non-elite or underrepresented people, have revolutionized the writing of Middle Eastern history. Subversives and Mavericks in the Muslim Mediterranean represents the next step in this transformation. The book explores the lives of eleven nonconformists who became agents of political and social change, actively organizing new forms of resistance—against either colonial European regimes or the traditional societies in which they lived—that disrupted the status quo, in some cases, with dramatic results. These case studies highlight cross-border connections in the Mediterranean world, exploring how these channels were navigated. Chapters in the book examine the lives of subversives and mavericks, such as Tawhida ben Shaykh, the first Arab woman to receive a medical degree; Mokhtar al-Ayari, a radical Tunisian labor leader; Nazli Hanem, Kmar Bayya, and Khiriya bin Ayyad, three aristocractic women who resisted the patriarchal structures of their societies by organizing and participating in intellectual salons for men and women and advocating social reform; Qaid Najim al-Akhsassi, an ex-slave and military officer, who fought against French and Spanish colonial expansion; and Boubeker al-Ghandjawi, a nearly illiterate trader who succeeded, though his diverse connections, in establishing important relations between the Moroccan sultan and the representative of the British government. Although based on individual and local perspectives, Subversives and Mavericks in the Muslim Mediterranean reveals new and unrecognized trans-local connections across the Muslim world, illuminating our understanding of these societies beyond narrow elite circles.

Clinging to life… An embassy terrorist attack in Africa left intelligence analyst Claire Day close to death, but she remembers nothing of the attack. She was left a husk of a woman. Only a shining figure in her dreams pulls her back from the brink—a mysterious man, strong, protective, powerful. He’s the only one that can keep the looming horror that haunts her dreams at bay—but she has no idea who he is. Obsessed by a ghost… They told former Marine Dan Weston that the beautiful woman that he kissed on the day of the terrorist attack was counted among the dead. He’s tried to move on, building a successful new career, but he just can’t get her hauntingly gorgeous eyes and her soft lips out of his head. It’s driving him nuts. When he finds out Claire’s not dead at all, nothing on earth, heaven or hell can keep him away. And just in time, too—because the dark forces that destroyed the Embassy will stop at nothing to destroy Claire, once and for all. But they didn’t reckon with Dan Weston… Please note: This title was previously published under the title Shadows at Midnight.

For eight years between 1998 and 2006, Luke Johnson wrote a regular column as 'The Maverick' in The Sunday Telegraph. His short, pithy essays tackled subjects ranging from rich lists to bankrupt companies, from high finance to investment techniques, from philanthropy to trophy wives, bringing a practitioner's eye to the commercial world and the people in it. The Maverick quickly developed a cult following among readers who wanted to understand the blunt truth about investment, entrepreneurs, business history, and corporate life. This book brings together 84 of the best articles, with updates, in a single volume. What makes them unique is that Luke Johnson is not just a first-class writer, he is also one of Britain's most successful entrepreneurs. He made his name with PizzaExpress, has run and owned businesses in many different sectors, and now takes stakes in fast-growing businesses through his company, Risk Capital Partners. He is also Chairman of Channel 4. The diversity of his experience enables him to write with insight and perspective about the very serious matter of making and losing money. If you are in business, you will find The Maverick entertaining, informative and inspiring. If you are not in business, you will discover what makes business people tick, the hurdles they have to overcome to succeed, and the substantial benefits they bring to society. www.lukejohnson.org

A Brand New Series from Elle Thorne, author of the Shifters Forever Worlds! ShifterFest: Spring Break meets Lollapalooza in Twilight. With hot wolf shifters. ShifterFest is held somewhere different every year. This year, it’s south of the Olympic National Forest in Washington, and Score Flanigan’s doing security. Every pack has to contribute two males—called tributes—to the cause. But hey, don’t go confusing them with the Hunger Games. This has nothing to do with that. They were called tributes long before some woman decided to write about kids killing each other in a post-apocalyptic world. Score was planning to meet himself a wolf-honey for the night—until he was informed he was doing security. Humans aren’t technically involved. In fact, they aren’t wanted. This is a “Shifters Only” event. It’s all about fellowship. Grown-up fun. Drinking. Carousing. The Wolf Council meets and discusses business. Some arrange marriages because that’s what some packs still do. Others get together to see family in other packs. A huge party. Journalist Bliss Thompson heard there was a big thing happening. Hey, it only took her eight years to get a degree. Don’t judge. And now, if she wants a job, she has to prove herself to the editor of the local paper by getting a story. And her friend Hailey has found a doozy of a story. Sure, Hailey says it involves a werewolf festival, but everyone knows werewolves aren’t real. Still, it should be fun.
