After leaving home in the summer of 84', I found myself knee deep in the drug scene. While there I found what would be my Savior. I did not "see" him at first; I heard him, or his boots that is. Snake skin cowboy boots with shiny silver taps, tips, and all. Just thinking about those boots now gives me a feeling I can't describe. They made a very distinct sound; like a small horse parading, not the normal kind, the ones that dance. He was very particular about his boots, matter of fact, he was very particular about everything. He had many boots and many rules. Following the rules was something I tried hard to be good at. The consequences for breaking those rules became more unpredictable and brutal over time. Easy, as he was known on the streets, was a Pimp and he said I was his Number One. My guess is now, all of us thought we were his number one. As the years went by things changed, but not for the better. I thought of escape, escaping him and everything he did. We all grew to know, death may be the only escape.

The collected memoirs of a 1913 San Francisco sex worker, their effect on society at the time, and where they fit in today’s world. In 1913 the San Francisco Bulletin published a serialized, ghostwritten memoir of a prostitute who went by Alice Smith. “A Voice from the Underworld” detailed Alice's humble Midwestern upbringing and her struggle to find aboveboard work, and candidly related the harrowing events she endured after entering “the life.” While prostitute narratives had been published before, never had they been as frank in their discussion of the underworld, including topics such as abortion, police corruption, and the unwritten laws of the brothel. Throughout the series, Alice strongly criticized the society that failed her and so many other women, but, just as acutely, she longed to be welcomed back from the margins. The response to Alice's story was unprecedented: four thousand letters poured into the Bulletin, many of which were written by other prostitutes ready to share their own stories; and it inspired what may have been the first sex worker rights protest in modern history. An introduction contextualizes “A Voice from the Underworld” amid Progressive Era sensationalistic journalism and shifting ideas of gender roles, and reveals themes in Alice's story that extend to issues facing sex workers today. Winner of the California Historical Society Book Award “Essential reading for anyone interested in the rich history of sexual commerce in the United States.”—Gretchen Soderlund, author of Sex Trafficking, Scandal, and the Transformation of Journalism, 1885-1917 “Not only for Bay Area history buffs, Alice will enlighten all readers to early shifts in gender roles and societal correlations today.”—Cassie Duggan, Literary Hub

Sex trafficking is currently a hot news topic, but it is not a new problem or just a problem in "other" countries. Every year, an estimated 300,000 American children are at risk of being lured into the sex trade, some as young as eight years old. It is thought that up to 90 percent of victims are never rescued. Stolen is the true story of one survivor who escaped--more than once. First recruited while staying with her family at a hotel in Miami Beach, Katariina Rosenblatt was already a lonely and abused young girl who was yearning to be loved. She fell into the hands of a confident young woman who pretended friendship but slowly lured her into a child prostitution ring. For years afterward, a cycle of false friendship, threats, drugs, and violence kept her trapped. As Kat shares her harrowing experiences, readers will quickly realize the frightening truth that these terrible things could have happened to any child--a neighbor, a niece, a friend, a sister, a daughter. But beyond that, they will see that there is real hope for the victims of sex trafficking. Stolen is more than a warning. It is a celebration of survival that will inspire.

Exposed is Kate Ouimette-Wedell's candid story of finding her way into and out of the commercial sex industry. After arriving in Hollywood to pursue her dream of breaking into the music business, Kate was soon trafficked by a man she believed was a friend. She escaped, but with no other means of survival, she went to work as an exotic dancer and sex worker. Kate's story takes you through the terror, desperation, and exhaustion of life in the sex industry. Across nightclubs, sex dungeons, and the mansions of A-listers in the Hills, Kate exposes the sex industry for what it is: trauma, exploitation, sexual abuse, and human trafficking. The details may shock you. But, most of all, Kate will inspire you. Because this is also the tale of how Kate managed to stay hopeful enough-despite betrayal, unrelenting disappointment, and a traumatic past-to rise to a place where she now offers hope and healing to other survivors. "Dear Survivor," she writes: "I wrote my story for the two of us. I tell it with boldness for you, because you matter and your story matters. My hope is that you find yourself in these pages, no matter where you are on your journey. You are not alone. And, as you are my witness, I am not alone in it anymore, either."
