Walter Leman was a native of Boston, and began his career as a journeyman actor there, at the Tremont Theatre, aged 17. He appeared most frequently in his home town, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and post gold rush California. In this book he describes his youthful enthusiasm for theater, and the notables with whom he acted. As was typical of the time, he appeared in a wide range of contemporary and classic works. His memories are colorful, and his reminiscences of his colleagues are warm and complimentary. An engaging peek into the workings of the theatre and the professional actors milieu during the 19th century.

Excerpt from Sixty Years of the Theater: An Old Critic's Memories Macready, Forrest, the Keans, the Booths, Daven port and their contemporaries, will readily assent to the degeneracy of the modern theater in all matters of sheer artistry and histrioni'sm. It is only in scenic accessories, and in the lighter and less permanent varieties of drama that it has made any notable advance. Some attempt has been made herein to point out some of the main causes of this generally acknowledged decadence, and to indicate the most hopeful measures for its arrest. Excerpt from William E. Burton; Actor, Author, and Manager: A Sketch of His Career With Recollections of His Performances The present volume was prompted by the thought that no adequate account of the late William E.
