The content of the book consists of information on tsunami propagation from the open sea to the coast and coastal tsunami warning using deployed HF radar systems in different parts of North America and Japan. In this book, tsunami propagation, preliminary methods for evaluating the suitability of radar sites for tsunami detection using simulated tsunami velocities and factors affecting tsunami detectability are discussed and methods for reducing the false alarms are described. It further covers multi-scale meteorological systems resulted in meteo-tsunami and tsunami generation due to a landslide or a submarine volcanic eruption, where few case studies have been presented. The occurrence and characteristics of tsunami in Sweden, using paleo-tsunami events from different parts of the Scandinavia and finally challenges and opportunities for reducing losses to fast-arriving tsunamis in remote villages along Pakistan coast, with few examples are also discussed.

In June 2015 we held a workshop on the beautiful island of Mallorca, Spain with a focus on sea level variability and change. Over 120 sea level experts from around the world attended this workshop, from a range of different disciplines. The main aims of the workshop were to: 1.) Evaluate the current state-of-knowledge of sea level science; 2.) Identify gaps and unresolved questions in any aspect of sea level science; and 3.) Design future research to address these issue. All aspects of sea level changes were covered, from global to regional, observations and modelling, processes driving mean sea level changes and extremes, from the geological scale to the instrumental era and future projections and including impacts on the coastal zones. This E-Book presents papers that came out of that workshop. Overall, these papers illustrate the multi-disciplinary nature of sea level research, cross-cutting many fields of research including: oceanography, meteorology, geology, coastal morphodynamics, engineering and the social-economic aspects. Collectively, theses articles represent an interesting range of perspectives and original studies that contribute to understanding the dynamic nature of sea level and its impacts across a wide range of time and space scales. Many coastal areas of the United States are at risk for tsunamis. After the catastrophic 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean, legislation was passed to expand U.S. tsunami warning capabilities. Since then, the nation has made progress in several related areas on both the federal and state levels. At the federal level, NOAA has improved the ability to detect and forecast tsunamis by expanding the sensor network. Other federal and state activities to increase tsunami safety include: improvements to tsunami hazard and evacuation maps for many coastal communities; vulnerability assessments of some coastal populations in several states; and new efforts to increase public awareness of the hazard and how to respond. Tsunami Warning and Preparedness explores the advances made in tsunami detection and preparedness, and identifies the challenges that still remain. The book describes areas of research and development that would improve tsunami education, preparation, and detection, especially with tsunamis that arrive less than an hour after the triggering event. It asserts that seamless coordination between the two Tsunami Warning Centers and clear communications to local officials and the public could create a timely and effective response to coastal communities facing a pending tsuanami. "The coast of British Columbia is susceptible to tsunamis generated by strong earthquakes within the Pacific Ocean and by local underwater earthquakes. Although the Strait of Georgia is partially sheltered from tsunami waves arriving from the open ocean, past tsunamis from major events, such as the 1964 Alaska and 2011 Tohoku tsunamis, have penetrated into the region. Vancouver Island is also in a seismically active zone; the magnitude 7.3 Vancouver Island Earthquake near Campbell River generated local tsunamis in the strait that caused considerable damage and the death of one person. The east coast of Vancouver Island is further susceptible to landslide-generated tsunamis, meteorological tsunamis and storm surge. This study examines the risk of marine flooding at Federal Government facilities located in the Saanich Inlet/Pat Bay and Nanaimo regions. Trans-oceanic tsunamis are found to present a substantial, but not major, threat to these two regions. The primary concern is a major tsunami generated by a great earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone.Submarine landslides, rock falls and avalanches are not uncommon on the British Columbia coast. The two regions having a high risk of future submarine slides are: (1) Roberts Bank, Fraser River delta; and (2) Malaspina Strait.
