Excerpt from Handbook of Telephones: Of the Signal Corps, U. S. Army In compliance with the instructions of the Chief Signal Officer of the Army, this handbook has been prepared to describe, in as simple and nontechnical language as possible, the construction and Operation of the various types of telephones and switch boards supplied by the Signal Corps for the use of the Army; consequently no reference to the engineering principles involved is made. The telephone is daily becoming of more and more importance to the Army. Nearly all Of the apparatus described in this book has been designed by the officers of the Corps to cover the special necessities that arise in the military service, where the requirements are quite different from those of ordinary commercial life. In the field apparatus strength and portability are the pre dominating features Of design, while the efficiency of talking and ringing circuits is maintained. A part of the field apparatus is intended to utilize the principles of simultaneous telegraphy and telephony over the same circuit. Since the issuance of the instructions of 1901, the types Of telephones and switch boards have all been standardized, and only those which are issued at present are described. I am indebted to Mr. R. A. Klock, electrical engineer, Signal Corps, for the material Of the text and the figures contained in Chapter VII. Excerpt from Manual of Visual Signaling of the U. S. Signal Corps So it may be said that visual signals are either tran sient or permanent - transient when each signal disap pears as soon as made; permanent when the signal remains for a time in view, as when flags are kept hoisted to be read, or a symbol is retained in a certain position. All systems of signals are based upon the principle that having a certain number of elementary signals, each in some way distinguishable from the other, they are made to appear singly or together in all possible arrangements and combinations necessary to form other signals. It may be necessary to know the number of signals that can be made with any given number of available elementary signals where the elementary signal is used only once in each display or where it may be used repeatedly up to the given number of places in the signal which it is desired to display. Under these conditions the possible number of different signals may be determined from the rules for the equation of arrangements.
