Excerpt from Mineral and Water Resources of California, Vol. 1: Mineral Resources Report of the United States Geological Survey in Collaboration With the California Division of Mines and Geology and the United State Bureau of Mines On November 13, 1964, I requested the Secretary of the Interior to determine if a comprehensive summary report on the mineral and water resources of California could be prepared for the use of citizens, professional personnel, and government, civic, and industrial leaders interested in mining, water, and industrial development. This report, prepared in response to my request by members of the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the California Division of Mines and Geology, and the California Department of Water Resources, with the cooperation of other individuals, is a thorough, detailed, and comprehensive work which I am sure will be of great value to all interested in the mineral and water resources of the State of California. I wish to express my thanks and appreciation to Secretary of the Interior Udall and to those in his Department, to the State of California agencies, and to all the individuals who contributed their efforts in compiling this very valuable and comprehensive report.
