Excerpt from Radio Telephony Since the publication of Dr. Erskine-Murray's excellent translation of Ruhmer's "Drahtlose Telephonie," there has appeared no complete exposition in any language, so far as the author is aware, of the important and growing field of radio telephony. The date of publication of Ruhmer's book was 1907, and in the succeeding decade advances have been made which render the methods there described obsolete. Accordingly the author has accepted the considerable task of writing a full description of the radio telephonic methods of the present in the thought that he might thus contribute to progress in that valuable art. Wherever possible, sufficiently complete descriptions of the apparatus employed have been given to enable the person skilled in the art to duplicate the results and to judge their value. In this connection, the ranges of transmission and the output power of the radiophonic stations have been presented. It has been thought, too, that the arrangement of apparatus in the set was of value in that it indicated how the various designers had attacked the problem of making radiophonic apparatus readily usable. It need hardly be stated that a good working knowledge of the methods and principles of modern radio telegraphy is necessary for the full appreciation of the material here set forth, though certain questions. common to both types of communication have been here considered in detail. The author desires to express his deep indebtedness for the valuable assistance in the form of information, illustrations, and diagrams which he has received from the following gentlemen and the organizations with which they are connected: Atlantic Communication Company and Messrs. Boehme, Brockmann and Reuthe; Compagnie Generale de Radiotelegraphie, and Lieutenants Colin and Jeance of the French Navy; Lieutenant W. Ditcham of the British Army; Mr. William Dubilier; Federal Telegraph Company and Mr. Leonard F.Fuller; General Electric Company and Messrs. E.F. W. Alexanderson, Albert W. Hull, and William C.White; Mr. W. Hanscom; Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America and Mr. Roy A. Weagant; National Electric Signaling Company and Mr. John L.Hogan, Jr.; Radio Telephone and Telegraph Company and Dr. Lee de Forest; Mr. Bowden Washington; Mr. Eitaro Yokoyama. Through their kindness he has been enabled to present here much important information and previously unpublished material. He also desires to commend highly the painstaking efforts of the editors of The Wireless Press to make this book measure up to the high aims of that organization. Reprinting, republishing and re-covering old books in new clothes is an established publishing practice. How are books that have fallen out of taste and favour resituated by publishers, and recognised by readers, as relevant and timely? This Element outlines three historical textures within British culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s – History, Remembrance and Heritage – that enabled Virago's reprint publishing to become a commercial and cultural success. With detailed archival case studies of the Virago Reprint Library, Testament of Youth and the Virago Modern Classics, it elaborates how reprints were profitable for the publisher and moved Virago's books - and the Virago brand name - from the periphery of culture to the centre. Throughout Virago's reprint publishing - and especially with the Modern Classics - the epistemic revelation that women writers were forgotten and could, therefore, be rediscovered, was repeated, again and again, and made culturally productive through the marketplace.

Excerpt from Modern Theory and Practice in Radio Communication: A Text Book Prepared for the Use of Midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy Our endeavor has been to provide a book containing all the information necessary for the student who does not intend to specialize on Radio, and at the same time to pro duce a book which will serve as a basis for further study for the student who does wish to specialize. The book is not intended, however, for an instruction manual for a radio operator who has little interest in the how and why of his apparatus. Requirements Of time and space have made it necessary to take for granted various statements which would be derived mathematically, or explained in detail, in a text dealing purely with fundamentals. These omissions are of such a nature that they may profitably be studied only by a student specializing on radio subjects. TO understand the work as presented, the student should have a knowledge Of elementary electricity and physics. Credit is due Lieutenant Commander P. L. Holland for Chapters I, II, III, IV, VI and XII. The remaining chapters are to be credited to G. D. Robinson. Department OF electrical engineering and physics. Excerpt from Radio and Television Communication For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see, Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be. The reach of imagination has ever sought to span the limits of terrestrial and temporal boundaries. Summoning mythical genii to their aid, poets and fablers traversed continents in seven-league boots and soared into the skies on magic carpets. This dream of transcending the immediate present, expressed at first in fantasy, became a practical challenge. The labyrinthine mysteries of nature invited exploration. Men heard the command, Search! Discover! And taking up the challenge began to fashion keys that would unlock the unknown The modern scientific era emerged. Theories, principles, and methods were evolved, and necessary implements invented by which they could be tested. Great names were written in the corridors of time: van Leeuwenhoek, Newton, Watt, Priestley, Volta, F arraday. They laid foundations on which others who came after them - men like Morse, Bell, Steinmetz, and Marconi - built towering superstructures. Fantasy became fact, and dreams reality. Comparisons and contrasts of the present and the past are considered platitudinous, and significant only to the historically curious. It is amus ing to hear about the number of days it took George Washington to plod the muddy roads from New York to Mount Vernon. The item that news of an armistice, reached by England and America in the War of 1812, took more than a year to cross the Atlantic, is a museum piece, indeed, to a generation accustomed to quarter-hour reports on what is taking place concurrently' in every part of the globe. The records of the fastest clipper ships have little romantic appeal to men acquainted with the stratosphere. An occasional schoolboy may declaim, What shall I say, brave Admiral, say, If we sight naught but seas at dawn?
