India started its economic reforms in 1991 and has seen huge incremental benefits – greater openness, higher growth and substantial poverty reduction. India is now the world's sixth largest economy and has seen major transformation in many parts of the economy and the country. But with new opportunities have come new challenges which are now being tackled. Seminal reforms such as GST and IBC are transforming the economic landscape of the country. India's infrastructure deficit is being addressed at a faster pace and the ease of doing business is being tackled on a war footing with India's global rankings showing huge improvements. But yet more needs to be done as the aspirations of India's young population are huge. India is also in the midst of a huge demographic transformation which if taken advantage of can propel India to even higher levels of growth. The benefits of India's demographic dividend and a huge domestic market puts it in an advantageous position to become a $9 - 10 trillion economy by 2030. However, our economic growth is contingent on improving competitiveness, attracting more investment, creating enough employment opportunities to absorb the growing population and overcoming the challenges of exclusion and inequitable access due to multiple deprivations of class, caste and gender — all of which require disruptive approaches to find solutions. Unfortunately, there is no single silver bullet, no one action that will fix all the problems that we face currently. Rather, we need to act on several fronts. The Modi’s Vision 2030” was initiated with a view to chart out an agenda of reforms and programmes in 10 inter-connected areas that will help drive India to its goals of shared prosperity by 2030 and a more competitive economy rising to become the third largest in the world. This report, encompassing ten underpinning chapters, identifies the challenges of tomorrow, points to key choices ahead, and recommends not just “what” needs to be reformed, but “how” to undertake the reforms. Policy consistency and coordination is essential if we are to achieve inclusive growth and significantly reduce unemployment. Productivity and investment-led transformation can inject new dynamism into the economy and ensure future growth, employment, and prosperity. This would enable the economy to gain the momentum it needs to become the global economic centre and become a magnet for investments. In the last 91 years, FICCI has played an active role in the progress and development of the Indian economy, representing not just the voice of industry but also being an active partner in the development agenda of the government. By 2030, India should transcend a new era of transformation and FICCI will continue to contribute to the building of a “New India”. We are confident that you will find this report insightful and engaging and look forward to your feedback and suggestions.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands located over 1200 km to India’s East are nature’s bounty inherited by India during the process of our Independence. Located on the strategic Sea Lines of Communication connecting the Indian Ocean to the Asia-Pacific region and sitting at the entrance of the Malacca Straits, they provide India with strategic reach and could act as a launch pad in the geographical vicinity of South-East Asia. In this book, the authors have brought in their nuanced views on issues of geopolitical reality of the 21st century, the importance of these islands, and the contribution that these islands could make to the security of mainland India. When Narendra Modi was elected Prime Minister of India in 2014, he promised to push through key reforms and bring about the massive economic development needed for the “world’s largest democracy” to win its place among global superpowers. With over 1.3 billion citizens, India is soon to become the world’s most populous country, and more than one quarter of the people joining global workforce during the next decade will be Indian. The poorest of the world’s 20 largest economies, India’s potential for catch-up growth is enormous. And so are the limits and contradictions India must overcome for Modi’s vision to gain momentum. What has his government achieved so far? How likely is Modi’s “Minimum government, maximum governance” strategy to deliver the expected outcomes? Is India, often described as a “reluctant superpower”, now closer to becoming a regional leader? In a crucial year for local elections, and with the Prime Minister ready to run for a second term in 2019, this volume investigates the economic, political and diplomatic trajectories of Modi’s India in its quest for a global role.

Science has become a central political concern with massive increases in public investments and expectations, but resources are embedded in a complex web of societal expectations, which vary between countries and regions. This book outlines an insightful understanding of science policy as both concerning the governance of science itself (priority-setting, funding, organization and articulation with polity, society, and economy) and its extra-organizational connections, in terms of higher education, innovation and national policy concerns.

This book by the Asia Competitiveness Institute (ACI) presents the inaugural regional competitiveness analysis for the five regions of India as a basis for the Master Plan on Strategic Regional Economic Development using regional classifications as defined by the Confederation of Indian Industry. Potential strategic clusters are identified for intra-regional collaboration given each region's unique strengths and resource endowments to facilitate accelerated economic growth and development which is balanced, fair and sustainable. The book also presents an update of ACI's annual competitiveness analysis of India's 35 states and federal territories. States and federal territories are ranked by ACI's comprehensive methodology by employing 75 indicators across four environments. Going beyond the rankings, the what-if policy simulations offer states and federal territories relevant policy prescriptions based on their respective strengths and weaknesses. A subset of the competitiveness indicators are then utilised for Geweke Causality Analysis to highlight the impact of strong leadership on economic development in the states of Bihar and Tamil Nadu.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's influence has overarching impact on the making of Modern India. However, his legacy was sidelined and subjected to institutional neglect. The book is a prism that reflects upon the multitude of contributions of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in the nation building process. Many of his ideas and interventions continue to define our governance paradigm, especially with PM Narendra Modi at the helm ensuring that his legacy is revived. The book studies the points of intersection of India’s development story under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ideals of Babasaheb. It also highlights the striking parallels between the two towering personalities that succeeded against all odds and worked to dismantle stifling social structures that they themselves experienced from close quarters.
