Excerpt from Moneys Received and Paid for Secret Services of Charles II. And James II: From 30th March, 1679, to 25th December, 1688 The book which is now laid before the Members of the Camden Society contains an account of moneys received and expended for what are termed "the secret services" of King Charles the Second and King James the Second, from the 30th March, 1679, to the 25th December, 1688. The account was rendered by Henry Guy, Esq. some time after the accession of William the Third, probably under an order from the new Government. The accountant acknowledges to have received during the nine years and three quarters to which his account relates the sum of 565,573l. 15s. 5 3/4d., and the account now printed sets forth the expenditure of the whole of that large sum, except a balance of 541l. 5s. 6 1/2d. The payments are scarcely of the kind which would be expected from the title of "secret services." They are principally divisible into two great classes: 1. Extraordinary expenses incident to the management of the Kings private estate, and the repairs and improvements of the royal residences; and 2. Payments and allowances to private persons, for services rendered to the crown. Under these two heads the great majority of the payments made by this accountant may be classified.
