Taking a theory elaboration approach, this dissertation is composed of four research papers that aim to drive multi-tier sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) theory forward. The papers encompass first a literature review on the current status of knowledge on SSCM and sustainability in mineral supply chains. Second, a Delphi study on sustainability issues in multi-tier mineral supply chains as well as their management. Third, a document review of sustainability standards for mineral resources showcasing the potential synergies of sustainability standards and sustainable supply chains and finally a generic conceptual study on the selection of multi-tier SSCM approaches considering institutional differences of focal firm and supplier context. In effect, the dissertation offers a number of mainly conceptual and literature based propositions for an alteration of the current multi-tier SSCM theory as well as the approaches to enhance the sustainability in mineral supply chains. Future research can build on these propositions and provide empirical validation in order to further enhance the propositions’ relevance for theory and praxis.

This book focuses on the need to develop sustainable supply chains - economically, environmentally and socially. This book is not about a wish list of impractical choices, but the reality of decisions faced by all those involved in supply chain management today. Our definition of sustainable supply chains is not restricted to so-called "green" supply chains, but recognises that in order to be truly sustainable, supply chains must operate within a realistic financial structure, as well as contribute value to our society. Supply chains are not sustainable unless they are realistically funded and valued. Thus, a real definition of sustainable supply chain management must take account of all relevant economic, social and environmental issues. This book contains examples from a wide range of real-life case studies, and synthesizes the learnings from these many different situations to provide the fundamental building blocks at the centre of successful logistics and supply chain management.

This book takes as its starting point the need to improve sustainability performance across the triple bottom line and reach global sustainable development goals. As such, it places sustainability at the heart of developing and explaining relevant theory, concepts and models in operations and supply chain management. Whereas previous textbooks on operations and supply chain management have focused on augmenting existing models of operations and supply chain management by simply adding on selected sustainability issues, this textbook places sustainability at the heart of operations and supply chain management. Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain Management consolidates the tools, concepts and methods of operations and supply chain management relevant for reaching sustainable development goals. This book includes not only descriptions of the theories and models but also practical cases based on the most recent developments in different industry sectors, including user electronics, healthcare, fashion and energy. Relevant student exercises are also included for use in the classroom or in personal study. This book provides an ideal introduction for Bachelor or Masters-level students, whether they are on general management and business degrees, or are focused on areas such as engineering management, technology management or sustainability management. Furthermore, university-level teachers and lecturers will find the material presented in this book a valuable basis for structuring their courses on operations and supply chain management in the context of sustainability.
