Echocardiography is essential in the practice of pediatric cardiology. A clinical pediatric cardiologist is expected to be adept at the non-invasive diagnosis of congenital heart disease and those who plan to specialize in echocardiography will need to have knowledge of advanced techniques. Echocardiography in Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease addresses the needs of trainees and practitioners in this field, filling a void caused by the lack of material in this fast-growing area. This new title comprehensively covers the echocardiographic assessment of congenital heart disease, from the fetus to the adult, plus acquired heart disease in children. Topics covered include: ultrasound physics laboratory set-up a protocol for a standard pediatric echocardiogram quantitative methods of echocardiographic evaluation, including assessment of diastolic function in depth coverage of congenital cardiovascular malformations acquired pediatric heart disease topics of special interest, such as 3D echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, and fetal echocardiography The approach of this book is a major advancement for educational materials in the field of pediatric cardiology, and greatly enhances the experience for the reader. An accompanying DVD with moving images of the subjects covered in the textbook will further enhance the learning experience.

Cardiovascular disease remains the major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout developed countries and is also rapidly increasing in developing countries. Cardiovascular medicine and the specialty of cardiology continue to expand, and the remit of the cardiologist is forever broader with the development of new sub-specialties. The Oxford Handbook of Cardiology provides a comprehensive but concise guide to all modern cardiological practice with an emphasis on practical clinical management in many different contexts. This second edition addresses all the key advances made in the field since the previous edition, including interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and pharmacology. It expands the remit to medical students and the more junior doctor while retaining the level of detail required by more senior practitioners within the field.

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges to the nation's K-12 education system. The rush to slow the spread of the virus led to closures of schools across the country, with little time to ensure continuity of instruction or to create a framework for deciding when and how to reopen schools. States, districts, and schools are now grappling with the complex and high-stakes questions of whether to reopen school buildings and how to operate them safely if they do reopen. These decisions need to be informed by the most up-to-date evidence about the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19; about the impacts of school closures on students and families; and about the complexities of operating school buildings as the pandemic persists. Reopening K-12 Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Prioritizing Health, Equity, and Communities provides guidance on the reopening and operation of elementary and secondary schools for the 2020-2021 school year. The recommendations of this report are designed to help districts and schools successfully navigate the complex decisions around reopening school buildings, keeping them open, and operating them safely.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) in Children. A Comprehensive Review. An association between a novel pediatric hyperinflammatory condition and SARS-CoV-2 was recently published and termed pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome, temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS) or multisystem inflammatory syndrome (in children) (MIS(-C)). Additionally, the sensitivity of different case definitions that are currently applied were studied. o PIMS-TS/MIS(-C) presents at a median age of 8 years. o Epidemiological enrichment for males (58.9%) and ethnic minorities (37.0% Black) is present. o Apart from obesity (25.3%), comorbidities are rare. PIMS-TS/MIS(-C) is characterized by fever, gastrointestinal and cardiocirculatory manifestations, and increased inflammatory biomarkers. Nevertheless, 50.3% present respiratory symptoms as well. Over half of patients (56.3%) present with shock. The majority of the patients (73.3%) need intensive care treatment, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in 3.8%. Despite severe disease, mortality is rather low. Of the currently used case definitions, the WHO definition is preferred, as it is more precise, while encompassing most cases. An attempt has been made in this Booklet to present the systematic review the most extensive to date to recent knowledge and to describe the epidemiological, clinical diagnostic criteria and clinical manifestations of this novel pediatric COVID-19-associated phenotype. …Dr. H.
