Reenie and her mama love to go fishing down by the river. But the peace of their idyllic fishing spot is often marred by the appearance of Peter Troop and his daddy. Peter is up-jumpy and loud, scaring the fish away. And the Troops harbor some resentment toward them, too. Peter and his daddy are fishing for food; Reenie and Mama fish for fun. The Troops are white; Reenie and Mama are black. And in the Jim Crow South, it is this last difference that is most significant. One day, when the Troops' fishing reel breaks, Reenie overcomes their mutual fear and mistrust to help Peter-an act that holds the promise of friendship and understanding. This is a moving story about two children crossing boundaries of race, class, and gender, and about small acts that make a big difference.

Excerpt from My Fishing Days and Fishing Ways: Being a Record of Experiences Gathered During Forty-Six Years of an Angler's Life While Fishing for So-Called Coarse Fishes in the Waters and Streams of Sixteen Countries and Twenty-Five Rivers The two volumes that I issued last year have met with phenomenal success, beyond my wildest hopes; and I thank my friends with a very grateful heart. To quote a well-known advertisement, they now want more. They are good enough to say that a volume of my own personal experiences and wanderings - ou river, lake, and stream, here, there, and everywhere - would be warmly received by them, and treated in a sympathetic manner. Modern-day fly fishing, like much in life, has become exceedingly complex, with high-tech gear, a confusing array of flies and terminal tackle, accompanied by high-priced fishing guides. This book reveals that the best way to catch trout is simply, with a rod and a fly and not much else. The wisdom in this book comes from a simpler time, when the premise was: the more you know, the less you need. It teaches the reader how to discover where the fish are, at what depth, and what they are feeding on. Then it describes the techniques needed to present a fly at that depth, make it look lifelike, and hook the fish. With chapters on wet flies, nymphs, and dry flies, its authors employ both the tenkara rod as well as regular fly fishing gear to cover all the bases. Illustrated by renowned fish artist James Prosek, with inspiring photographs and stories throughout, Simple Fly Fishing reveals the secrets and the soul of this captivating sport.

Excerpt from My Fishing Days and Fishing Ways: Being a Record of Experiences Gathered During Forty-Six Years of an Angler's Life While Fishing for So-Called Coarse Fishes in the Waters and Streams of Sixteen Countries and Twenty-Five Rivers My Dear Brother Fisherman, - I make no apology for putting this volume on your already loaded bookshelves, because I have faith to believe that you will welcome this addition to the never-ending stream of angling literature. The two volumes that I issued last year have met with phenomenal success, beyond my wildest hopes; and I thank my friends with a very grateful heart. To quote a well-known advertisement, they now "want more." They are good enough to say that a volume of my own personal experiences and wanderings - on river, lake, and stream, here, there, and everywhere - would be warmly received by them, and treated in a sympathetic manner. This volume does not pretend to be a guide to fishing, in the ordinary cut-and-dried sense of such term; but in its pages I take you into my confidence, and talk to you as one old fisherman talks to his mates, telling you what I saw on the various waters, the fish I found, how I succeeded and how I failed. This book is a plain statement of fact and personal experiences, the pages of which furnish glimpses of natural history, descriptions of the waters and their characteristics, scenery and surroundings, together with a few historical notes connected therewith, which will perhaps have more than a passing interest for the wandering angler.
