During the last week of the season of Lent, called Holy Week, we join Jesus as he walked through the final stretch toward his death and resurrection. The first Holy Week began with Jesus riding into Jerusalem being praised as king and culminated in Jesus’s earthly body lying in a tomb. This astonishing week of contrast encompasses such a sweeping range of emotion and expression for the believer—from unrestrained praise to deep mourning. The Week That Changed the World reflects on the footsteps of Jesus as he walked through the last week of his earthly life. The entire life of Jesus was a prelude to the events and teachings during his final week. One half of all four Gospel accounts focus on the final week of Jesus’s ministry. If this week was so important to the Gospel writers, should we not consider its importance for our own lives today? By reflecting upon the events of Holy Week, we gain a greater understanding of the mission of Jesus. It is a thought-provoking, heart-wrenching week, one that leads to the most important event in history: the resurrection of Jesus, our Redeemer and King. Uplifting and moving, this study invites you to grow deeper in your relationship with God through a better understanding of the last week in the life of Jesus Christ.

In these reflections on the readings for Lent and the Triduum, Monsignor McIlhon invites us to ponder the consistency between what we believe about human dignity and how we live that dignity. If Lent becomes a daily journey whereby we consent to become one with the visible features of Christ's risen life, waiting to be raised from the dyings of our life, then the paschal mystery becomes a marvelous experience. Although he writes with great sensitivity and theological depth, Monsignor McIlhon does not become pedantic nor does he go beyond the depth of the average reader. For priests, religious, and serious lay people looking for something more than pious writing about the most important season of the Church year, this book will make excellent Lenten reading.

“I forgot!” How many of us have heard those words from our own mouths after we failed to remember something important? God’s people, both in the Old Testament and his redeemed today, are guilty of forgetting what matters most in the busyness of daily life. Is it any wonder that in the Law of God, the Torah, three festivals a year were to be attended by all Jewish males to reflect on God’s grace, goodness, and revealed truth? In Deuteronomy 6:9–12, the people were to put God’s word on their doorposts so that they would not forget his commands and acts of deliverance when they settled in the promise land. In the New Testament, Jesus institutes two ordinances (baptism and the Lord’s Supper) for the church to practice in order to remember and reverently celebrate what he accomplished on their behalf. Throughout Holy Scripture, God calls his forgetful people to reflect on and remember his past works, so they may see his everlasting glory. Taking a journey through Holy Week in the Gospel of Matthew is another opportunity to reflect on the person and work of the Lord Jesus. Holy Week begins on the first Sunday before Resurrection Sunday (Easter) and reflects on the events of Jesus’ last days leading up to his crucifixion and resurrection. This journey through Holy Week is meant to remind us of the person and work of Jesus so that our affections will be stirred and our mouths will praise him to the glory of God the Father.
