Excerpt from Nature in the Witness-Box: Or, Suggestive Parallels All kingdoms were made by God, and lie parallel. The laws and phenomena of one kingdom, therefore, must have their counterparts in the other kingdoms. This great and ramifying Nature about us, visible and tangible and patent, was, I doubt not, meant by heaven to be for man a kindergarten school, wherein he might learn not only things earthly but also things heavenly. This book is an attempt at the making plain of certain of Nature's laws and phenomena, and at the finding of their certain parallels in kingdoms that are higher. It is an attempt first, to increase our love for and knowledge of Nature herself, and then to make that love and knowledge concerning this which is visible serve as means for greater love and knowledge and faith in kingdoms that are invisible. I beg to return my thanks for assistance in the final revision of the text to the well-known scientists, Profs. John B. De Motte and H. C. White. This text traces the metavalues of truth and justice as developed in English trial advocacy treatises from 1600 to the late nineteenth century. Key questions addressed include: When lawyers historically have given written guidance to other lawyers about the most effective ways of advocating in court, what do they emphasize? How have advocacy texts incorporated society's concerns about truth and justice into their advice? Has there been a shift in the balance between discussions of truth and justice and the best techniques for winning cases?
