Excerpt from Nature Pictures by American Poets The editor's aim in this compilation has been to select, from the works of representative American poets, certain pictures of nature, either vignettes of specific objects or broad landscape effects. There has been a hope that the book might aid in nature study and might foster aesthetic observation and culture. The selections are all taken from authors of high literary rank, with the desire to promote among the younger students a further acquaintance with con temporaneous poets, and, at the same time, to recall familiarly certain classic American poems of description and narration. Doubtless the selections disclose sins of commission and of omission. The editor deeply regrets the ah sence of poems by Sidney Lanier, since satisfactory arrangements could not be made with his publishers. In the introduction, however, tribute has been paid to the poet's sensitive and melodious nature pictures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Excerpt from The Poetry of Nature Tintern Abbey, or sweeping us away with tempest tones, like Shelley's West Wind. But two things I have sought and found in all of them, simple or profound. They are true to the facts of Nature, faithful in observation of her works and ways; not daring to report falsely or foolishly of birds and flowers, of trees and rivers, but seeing with a lover's eyes, and painting with a lover's hand, loyal to the form as well as to the spirit. They are also clear and lucid in their utterance of the idea or emotion which is their life; not shapeless and incoherent, darkening the face of Nature by words without knowledge; but illuminating it with the light that comes from a spirit that can both think and feel. Excerpt from Poems of Nature and Love Under the present title are included selections from two former volumes, Accolan of Gaul, and Lyrics and la'yls. Such poems only as appeared to the author's judgment worthiest of retention have been retained. In the selection of these he has endeavored to exercise a critical discrimination and, to the best of his ability, to correct or expunge the frequent obscurity, superfluity, and exaggerated expression of the earlier works. Many of the poems have been partially, several entirely, rewritten. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Nature-Poems: And Others I pondered on its magic flight, When, falling on the lawn, my sight With one more tiny thing Arrested was. There at my feet I saw a daisy, clean and neat, From out the green grass spring. I thought I heard it silent cry, You've complimented much the fly Am I not worth a thought? I cannot buzz, and fly, and spring, I know, like yonder little thing, But that is not my fault! Saluted thus, I plucked the flower, And could have gazed for full an hour Upon its lovely form Within whose pure white radiance grew Such golden constellation true, Of flowers well-formed, though small.
