Power and Politics in the Neo-Elamite Kingdom (c. 1100-520 BC) documents one of the most obscure episodes in the political history of ancient southwestern Iran. Elam's strategic position between the Mesopotamian alluvial plain, the Persian Gulf and the Iranian highlands made it a target for territorial expansion of the Neo-Assyrian empire. However, the ability of the Neo-Elamite kings to engage in a political alliance with the Neo-Babylonian kingdom, the flexibility of the Neo-Elamite government system and the dynamics between the various ethnic and social groups living within the multiple valleys of Elam protected the Elamite heartland for centuries against the continuous military threat. Elam became an indisputable partner in an inter-regional network of Mesopotamian states until the emergence of the Persian empire reshaped the political landscape of the Ancient Near East. By re-evaluating the dynastic lineage of Neo-Elamite kings, the geopolitical power of the Neo-Elamite kingdom and the (trans-)formation the Elamite government system in the 1st millennium BC through written and archaeological evidence, this book aims to improve our understanding of the last centuries of Elam.

From 10 January 1979 to 4 April 1979 Michel Foucault delivered his annual public lecture at the College De France, Paris titled: 'The Birth of Biopolitics' which did not deal with Biopolitics and its Birth. Foucault in this 1979 public lecture delivered a deconstruction of the North Atlantic discourse of liberalism/neo-liberalism. Foucault's deconstruction presented the key, basic, strategic concepts of the discourse and its discursive agents thereby revealing the worldview of the discourse, its strategic agenda and its concepts of governmentality to realise its hegemony over the social order. This work is a deconstruction of Foucault's discourse of liberalism/neo-liberalism towards articulating: the order of power of North Atlantic neo-liberalism in the 21st Century since the financial meltdown of 2008 and articulating the order of power of the colonial/neo-colonial order of power of the English speaking Caribbean in the 21st Century. The salient reality that has emerged from this exercise is the replication of the colonial/neo-colonial order of power in the North Atlantic under the hegemony of neo-liberal discourse especially since the financial meltdown of 2008 to 2021. Power in general and women's power in particular has been understood mostly in a hierarchical way in earlier research on Mesopotamian women. Hierarchical power structures were important in Mesopotamia, but other kinds of power structures existed as well. This study, which focuses on women in the palaces of the Neo-Assyrian Empire (c. 930-610 BCE), draws attention to heterarchical power relations in which women were engaged in the Neo-Assyrian palace milieu. Heterarchical power relations include power relations such as reciprocal power, resistance, and persuasion. Although earlier research has certainly been aware of women's influence in the palaces, this study makes explicit the power concepts employed in previous research and further develops them using the concept of heterarchy. The study is based on primary cuneiform sources and presents a detailed description of women in Neo-Assyrian palaces. However, it additionally shows that by applying modern theories of power to the study of ancient texts, one can gain important new insights into the dynamics of ancient society.
