Forest resources have played a very im portant role in New Mexico's development. The forest range has a particularly long his tory of use. Progeny of cattle, sheep, and horses brought in by Coronado in 1540 have grazed forested lands throughout succeed ing centuries. Water from the high forested country stimulated agricultural settlement to begin with and has subsequently made it possible to irrigate almost 1 million acres of cropland. Timber harvesting has in creased from the small amounts used for fuel and construction by settlers to nearly 14-billion board feet a year. Hunting and fishing, which originally provided important sources of food, are now significant reasons for the booming development of outdoor recreation. Forests can contribute much more to the future development of the State. In general, demands for forest resources are increasing rapidly along with the country's mounting population. An inevitable result is that forest management problems are in creasing, especially on the nearly 70 per cent of the forest land that is publicly owned. On these public lands the need for increasing yields of timber, water, and for age as well as recreation facilities within a fairly fixed area creates complex problems in multiple use management. Before going into future needs and problems, the next few sections describe past development and the current situation.
