When Henry Nalaielua was diagnosed with Hansen's disease in 1936 and taken from his home and family, he began a journey of exile that led him to Kalaupapa—the remote settlement with the tragic history on the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i. During its century as a virtual prison, more than 8,000 people were exiled to Kalaupapa, until the introduction of sulfone drugs in the 1940s. Today fewer than 30 patients remain. This is Henry's story—an unforgettable memoir of the boy who grew to build a full and joyous life at Kalaupapa, and still calls it home today. No Footprints in the Sand is one of only a few memoirs ever shared with the public by a Kalaupapa patient. Its intimacy and candor make it, in the words of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.S. Merwin, “a rare and precious human document.” Nalaielua's story is an inspiring one; despite exile, physical challenges and the severing of family ties, he has faced life—as an artist, musician and historian—with courage, honesty, hope and humor.

When Emily Kingsley arrives at the church, late and sad, for her Great Aunt Mary’s funeral, she has no idea that her life is about to change completely. Still grieving for her broken relationship with the vain, mean and unfaithful Ted, and trying to come to terms with the cracks which seem to be appearing in her parents’ marriage, she sobs her heart out in the church. At the wake afterwards, however, she and her cousin Clemmie are told that Mary has appointed them executors of part of her Will. They are to transport her ashes to Mali, in western Africa and her final resting place is to be Timadjlalen, in the Saharan desert. And so begins Emily and Clemmie’s adventure – a journey that will be the most important of their lives.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A delightful sampler plate of our national parks, written with charisma and erudition.”—Nick Offerman, author of Paddle Your Own Canoe From CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Conor Knighton, a behind-the-scenery look at his year traveling to each of America's National Parks, discovering the most beautiful places and most interesting people our country has to offer NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY OUTSIDE When Conor Knighton set off to explore America's "best idea," he worried the whole thing could end up being his worst idea. A broken engagement and a broken heart had left him longing for a change of scenery, but the plan he'd cooked up in response had gone a bit overboard in that department: Over the course of a single year, Knighton would visit every national park in the country, from Acadia to Zion. In Leave Only Footprints, Knighton shares informative and entertaining dispatches from what turned out to be the road trip of a lifetime. Whether he's waking up early for a naked scrub in a historic bathhouse in Arkansas or staying up late to stargaze along our loneliest highway in Nevada, Knighton weaves together the type of stories you're not likely to find in any guidebook. Through his unique lens, America the Beautiful becomes America the Captivating, the Hilarious, and the Inspiring. Along the way, he identifies the threads that tie these wildly different places together—and that tie us to nature—and reveals how his trip ended up changing his views on everything from God and love to politics and technology. Filled with fascinating tidbits about our parks' past and reflections on their fragile future, this book is both a celebration of and a passionate case for the natural wonders that all Americans share.

'I have fallen completely in love with Judith Lennox's writing - she's a fantastic storyteller!' Jill Mansell With the onset of war, everything changes... Judith Lennox writes an unforgettable novel of enduring love and the tides of fortune in the compelling novel Footprints on the Sand. Perfect for fans of Dinah Jefferies and Lucinda Riley. The Mulgraves are a rootless, bohemian family who travel the continent, staying in crumbling Italian palazzos, Spanish villas, French vineyards - belonging nowhere, picking up friends and hangers-on as they go, and moving on when Ralph Mulgrave's latest enthusiasm dwindles. Faith, the eldest child of the family, longs for a proper home. But in 1940, Germany invades France and the Mulgraves are forced to flee to England. Faith and her brother Jake go to London, while Ralph reluctantly settles in a Norfolk cottage with the remnants of his family. In the intense and dangerous landscape of wartime London Faith finds work as an ambulance driver, and meets once again one of Ralph's retinue from those distant and, in retrospect, golden days of childhood. Through war and its aftermath, it is Faith on whom the family relies, Faith who offers support and succour, and Faith who is constant and true in her love. What readers are saying about Footprints on the Sand: 'Curl up and get lost in this wonderfully written book that takes you from early 1900 through to the 1960s' '[Judith Lennox] can paint a picture so vividly in your mind, make you care about her characters, make you feel the anguish, the partings, the love that is taken away and then given back. A wonderful read' 'Such wonderful escapism - well written and compelling!'

"Elsa May Malone was only five when the sea took away her beloved father. Traumatized, angry and forced to leave her home on the Cumbrian coast, she became hostile and withdrawn. Then she met Bryn Evans, a kindhearted boy who'd experienced loss, too. Slowly, Elsa began to let down her barriers -- until she and Bryn were torn apart. Alone again, Elsa was sure of one thing: everyone she loved would eventually leave her. When Bryn and Elsa finally reunite, Elsa's determined not to let her true feelings show. But they're grown up now, and Bryn clearly hopes their childhood friendship can become something more. Elsa is painfully aware that love can be as serene and yet as terrifying as the sea. But can she let Bryn into her heart before she loses him a second time?"--Page 4 of cover.

No one, even myself, ever thought I would and could write poetry. Yet with God, all things are possible! I have seen more tragedy and death in my life than I would hope no other person ever has to go through. However, through these things, God has brought me out victorious. I have not been perfect, no, not even close. I have fallen short many times in my life, yet God is always there to forgive and guide me home. I can never thank Jesus enough for all He has done for me! After the loss of my wife of forty-three years, I felt so alone and hurt. God comforted me and sent to me a wonderful Christian lady to be my love again. It has been a wonderful miracle to see how God does care and loves each one of us and knows what we need in this life. "Making Your Own Footprints in the Sand" was my first real poem and has always been my favorite, and it continues to help me and guide me through life's good days and stormy days. At the end of this book, I give several thoughts that God has given me over the years. I hope and pray they bless you as well! These poems, I pray, will achieve the following: * Give you peace in things we'll all go through in life. * Help you think about the "good things" that are in life. * Build your faith and confidence in the Word and in God. * Inspire your mind to write, preach, teach, or just give you some joy. Thank you and God bless you for reading!
