For centuries, rabbits have been used as a food commodity. And yet even today when there are millions of families keeping rabbits as domestic companions, the parallel perception of those prey animals as commodity remains equally dominant in public discourse. In Nobody Wants to Eat Them Alive, authors Gayane Torosyan and Brian Lowe use semiotic analysis to explore the changes occurring in societal perception of rabbits as commodity animals as juxtaposed to their increasing popularity as domestic companions. The study is based on a preliminary hypothesis that rabbits are increasingly perceived and portrayed in the media as domestic pets similar to cats and guinea pigs, which challenges the parallel narrative that views rabbits as farm animals for their meat and fur, or as subjects of medical tests. Operating within a theoretical framework that considers news media as both a socially constructed reflection of reality and recorder history, the study examines the dynamics of change in numbers of coded new narratives drawn as a convenience sample of one thousand published articles from a database of news and features published worldwide between 1990 and 2011. From commodity to companion, a shift in perspective can herald a dramatic shift in progressive ethical treatment. Thus for rabbits, such a shift signals a trend toward more humane practices and a decline in exploitative practices such as slaughter and laboratory experimentsand perhaps points toward the promising trend of a more humane society in general.

Perfect for fans of Maria Semple and Jennifer Weiner, this “laugh-out-loud gem” (Beck Dorey-Stein, New York Times bestselling) of a debut novel follows Ramona through the forty-eight hours after her life has been upended by the discovery of her husband’s affair and an approaching hurricane. Ramona has a bratty boss, a potty-training toddler, a critical and over-sharing mom, and oops—a cheating husband. That’s how a Category Four hurricane bearing down on her life in Savannah becomes just another item on her to-do list. In the next forty-eight hours she’ll add a neighborhood child and the class guinea pig named Clarence Thomas to her entourage as she struggles to evacuate town. Ignoring the persistent glow of her minivan’s check engine light, Ramona navigates police check points, bathroom emergencies, demands from her boss, and torrential downpours while fielding calls and apology texts from her cheating husband and longing for the days when her life was like a Prince song, full of sexy creativity and joy. Thoroughly entertaining and completely relatable, None of This Would Have Happened if Prince Were Alive is the “keenly observant, fast-paced” (Amy Poeppel, author of Musical Chairs) story of modern womanhood.

Life can get overwhelming. Fear, anxiety, and depression sneak up on us at any moment and suddenly we’re drowning. Fear comes into play when we anticipate or become aware of something dangerous that poses a threat to our well-being. In some ways, fear can be a good thing, as it’s the built-in survival mechanism that keeps us from entering potentially life-threatening situations. For Christians, fear can also be detrimental to the ways we experience and manifest faith if we let it linger unaddressed. Fear can also be the thing holding you back from giving your life to Jesus. Dr. Jeremy McGarity, lead pastor of Skyline Church in San Diego, is a devoted follower of Christ who presents the truth of God’s Word in clear and immediately applicable ways. He asks questions like how do we walk every day in faith over fear? How do we calm the storms all around us, and what happens when we doubt? Each chapter concludes with application-focused questions, a journal prompt, and an action step so you can allow the truth to impact you in a personal and powerful way. Friends, we were made for more than just wrestling, striving, and struggling. We were made for hope, faith, and freedom from fear.

“You’re asking Bible-believing righteous folk to put their lives in the hands of jail birds.” Popular romance and historical fiction writer Gilbert Morris serves up his most unique story yet in Angel Train. The mid-1800s tale introduces Charity Morgan, a beautiful yet businesslike young heroine whose devout religious community is losing its Pennsylvania homestead to the economic recession. To survive and stay together, the members plan to form a wagon train to Oregon where free land is aplenty. The only catch is that no wagon master is better equipped to lead them safely out West than inmate Casey Tremayne and his band of fellow felons. After Charity’s prison warden uncle offers the men parole upon completion of this sacred and dangerous journey, only divine intervention can bring all parties to common ground.
