Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the use of certain nonimmigrant visa categories that cover aliens who are admitted to the United States to work at the request of their prospective employers. GAO noted that the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) has not published data on nonimmigrant worker admissions since fiscal year (FY) 1978 because of management information systems problems. GAO developed estimates of selected characteristics of nonimmigrant workers who entered the country in FY's 1979, 1981, and 1983. INS plans to resume publication of such statistical data in FY 1985.
