The use of cover crops in agriculture to enhance soil health, and, thus, increase crop health, is a well-known practice and has been a part of agriculture for thousands of years. Over the past century, however, cover crop usage diminished in America, due in large part, to the adoption of many modern farm technologies. Recently, the numbers of farmers using cover crops and the number of acres being planted in cover crops have been on the rise. The term "cover crop" has even become a buzzword within the agricultural industry. Despite the growing trend, overall usage in North America continues to be minimal. The goal of this project is to increase the likelihood that farmers will adopt cover cropping, thus increasing the total number of farms and acres on which cover crops are planted. The Cover crop guide for northern climate farmers aims to remove the limiting factors that prevent farmers from using cover crops by providing an easy to use, easy to understand guidebook, and potentially, a mobile device application, that will educate and guide farmers. This will be achieved through the guide's ability to provide information needed for farmer to incorporate cover crops easily, successfully, and sustainably. As more farmers use the guidebook, it can be expected that confidence of success will increase m,leading to an increase in the number of farmers using cover crops successfully. Rapid growth in the number of acres of cover crops being seeded each year is expected as barriers are reduced through the use of the guidebook.
