On my settlement in this town in July, 1833, I felt no little desire to make myself acquainted with the past history of the venerable Church which in the providence of God was committed to my care. I sought for its Records, but soon found that there were none reaching farther back than the ministry of Dr. Kollock. All beyond were lost amid the confusion of the war of the Revolution, or during the partial insanity of Mr. Austin. I next examined the Records of the Trustees, which, although extending back upwards of one hundred years, yet contain but little beyond the mere details of business. This handbook is an essential guide to the LAMSAS project, laying out its history and describing its scope and methodology. In addition, the handbook reveals biographical information about the informants and social histories of the communities in which they lived, including primary settlement areas of the original colonies. Dialectologists will rely on it for understanding the LAMSAS, and historians will find it valuable for its original historical research. Since much of the LAMSAS questionnaire concerns rural terms, the data collected from the interviews can pinpoint such language differences as those between areas of plantation and small-farm agriculture.
