In 1899, when many New Hampshire residents were moving to cities and other parts of the nation, Frank Rollins, soon to become governor of New Hampshire, delivered a proposal to hold an annual event he dubbed Old Home Week. Similar in form to many of the family and town picnics already a tradition throughout New Hampshire, Old Home Week was designed as an open invitation to all the former residents of the Granite State to return to the homes of their youth. In addition to the ballgames, picnics, parades, and bonfires that were held during the third week of August, the celebrations resulted in municipal improvements across the state. Old homesteads were refurbished as summer homes, and libraries and monuments sprung up throughout the region as residents returned, creating a movement toward a renewed pride in the community.

Carlisle's earliest settlers lived in the northernmost part of Concord c. 1650. This community, firmly rooted in agricultural soil, became a town in 1805. In 1900, the population was four hundred eighty, comprised mostly of farm families. By 1960, only five large farms remained, and the population had soared to fifteen hundred. Although Carlisle's agricultural days are over, three working farms, many historic barns scattered through town, and the area's only cranberry bog echo its rural past. With its town meeting government, town common, steepled churches, and vast conservation lands, Carlisle reflects the best of New England small-town life.

Excerpt from Old Home Day: Proceedings of the One Hundred and Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Incorporation of the Town of Dover, Massachusetts, Wednesday, July 7, 1909 An appropriation of three hundred dollars was made to meet the necessary expenses. A joint committee of the town and the Dover Historical Society arranged for the celebration and carried out an interesting programme, the entire expense of which was kept within the appropriation. A more perfect summer day for the celebration could not have been desired, fair skies and gentle breezes prevailed. It was estimated that at least a thousand persons were in attendance during the day. All public buildings and private residences in the center of the town were tastefully adorned. The interior of the meeting house was beautifully decorated with crimson ramblers and horse brier, while the town hall was dressed in our national colors. An arch was erected over the central path lead ing across the Common, which bore a Welcome for all. Derby's Natick Band discoursed appropriate music throughout the day, from a band stand, which had been erected on the Common. Able committees on invitations, reception, literary and musical exercises, decorations, badges, refreshments, sports and finance, attended to every detail of the celebration.
