It is indeed a pleasure to write a foreword for this spectacular book which represents a landmark in the history of ocular pathology. Not since the three volumes of the Henke-Lubarsch handbook appeared forty years ago has anything like this come on the market. This book represents a compre hensive, thorough and up-to-date clinically oriented textbook on ocular pathology. We are all indebted to the senior author, who is now professor of ophthal mology at the University of Erlangen, who presents us here with the fruit of decades of industrious endeavors. We also have to be grateful to the American ophthalmic pathologist, Dr. David Apple, who, as one of the main collaborators of the German edition, has now provided us with the English translation. The book has a twofold purpose: First, it is meant to be a source of instruction for ophthalmologists and pathologists. For that purpose it is beautifully illustrated both by clinical pictures and by excellent photomicro graphs and electromicroscopic pictures. Most valuable from a didactic point of view are the colored schematic drawings and the many tables. These two features are practically unique and should help any neophyte in grasp ing the principles of ocular pathology.

Ophthalmic Pathology: A Concise Guide provides an introductory book of essential and fundamental information that will give the reader a solid foundation in ophthalmic pathology. The volume differs from the available classic and comprehensive ophthalmic pathology textbooks in its basic and simplified ‘one month approach’ concept. The text is rich in macroscopic and microscopic pathology images, clinical images, and bullet-point lists. Each chapter (Overview; Cornea; Conjunctiva; Eyelids; Uveal Tract; Retina; Orbit; and, Optic Nerve) includes approximately 30 color figures of common eye pathology diagnoses and also reviews the normal histology of each ocular component. An assortment of commentary related to common diagnoses and differential diagnostic considerations, clinical and pathological correlations, pearls and pitfalls, and ophthalmic pathology terminology can be found in each chapter. Other topics include: the fundamental pathology of glaucoma, trauma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and the phacomatoses; commonly used histochemical stains employed in ophthalmic pathology; and basic prosection of enucleation and evisceration specimens.

Updated self-assessment questions test overall understanding of the field and prepare for the Board Examination. Book is well-positioned for all levels of Eye Health Care Providers Over 240 color photographs and 930 black-and-white illustrations clearly depict hundreds of clinical entities and pathology specimens (external and slit-lamp photographs, fundus photographs, retinal angiograms, anatomic, histologic and electromicroscopic photos of all eye tissues and their diseases, along with numerous sketches and schematic illustrations of tissues). Increased number of Questions and Answers, from 35 to 50 per chapter, for a total of 550. Update on diagnosis and therapy of retinal diseases, including AIDS, and new material on indocyain green angiography. Updated sections on pathology of lens, cataract surgery, and intraocular lenses. This material has been updated to include modern small incision surgery and foldable lens technology, which has greatly expanded since 1989 and is now the preferred cataract surgical procedure of most ophthalmologists. This book continues to be the only text available which covers the pathology of cataract surgery and intraocular lenses. A new chapter has been added which represents the first comprehensive publication on clinicopathological correlation of refractive surgery, including incisional refractive surgery (RK), refractive surgery with lasers (PRK and LASIK), and refractive intraocular lenses. The information is based on the extensive experience of Dr. Apple's laboratory at the Storm Eye Institute in Charleston. The material and illustrations in this chapter have never been published elsewhere. There has been extensive update of references of all topics in the book.
