Our cousins across the broad Atlantic, indeed, scarcely regard an Englishman as a stranger at all. They certainly do not behave towards him as if he were one. England is called the old country, the mother country, but never a foreign country. And the respect paid to the old land is extended to the travellers who come from it. Every courtesy and attention are given to him. He is told to make himself, and is made to feel himself, perfectly at home. If the visitor does not have a good time of it, or, to put it more emphatically, a high old time of it, it must be mainly his own fault.
