Excerpt from Outlines of Ceylon History T an interview accorded by H. E. Sir Henry Blake on 2ud July, 1906, to a deputation Of the Ceylon Social Reform Society, on the question of the teaching of Ceylon History in the local schools being raised, the objection was taken by the Acting Director of Public Instruction that there was no suitable school history available; and he held outa promise to do all he could to further the study Of the subject as soon as such a book was brought into existence. I have accordingly devoted almost all my leisure to the produc tion Of such a work, as I believe will not only be of use in the schools, but will also interest the general reader; and I Shall consider my labour well rewarded if it would but assist the youth Of the country to acquire some knowledge of their past. Excerpt from Notes on Ceylon and Its Affairs, During a Period of Thirty-Eight Years, Ending in 1855: To Which Are Appended Some Observations on the Antiquity of Point De Galle and on the Pearl Fishery Colombo surrendered by the Dutch - The Administration of the Honourable the East India Company superseded by the Crown on the arrival of its representative Governor North - General Maitland - General Brownrigg - King of Kandy deposed -Bishop Middleton - Kandian Rebellion - Rebellion suppressed. On referring to the "Chronological table of events connected with Ceylon, in the Ceylon," Almanack published at the Government printing-office at Colombo in 1852, it will be seen that it was on the 16th of February, 1796, that the Dutch Government at Colombo surrendered all authority in and over the maritime provinces of the Island of Ceylon to the British forces under Colonel Stuart and Captain Gardner, R.N.; and that, with the exception of the mountain zone, ruled by the King of Kandy, the Island became subject to the Presidency of Port St. George, and civil officers were sent from Madras to administer the government. In the succeeding year, 1797, an attempt was made to levy a tax of one fanam annually (which at that time was equal to about twopence) upon all fruit-bearing trees. As the produce of these trees, particularly that of the cocoanut and the palmyra, formed the chief support of most of the inhabitants, the collection of this direct tax occasioned general dissatisfaction, and led to a revolt, which "finally induced or compelled the Government to abandon the tax altogether." Excerpt from From Adam's Peak to Elephanta: Sketches in Ceylon and India The spectacle of the social changes now taking place in India is one that is full of interest to anyone who has studied and taken part in the Socialistic movement at home; and the interest of it is likely to increase. For though the movement in India is not the same as that at home, it forms a curious counterpart to the latter; and being backed by economic changes which will probably persist for years to come is not likely to die out very soon. Excerpt from The History of Ceylon: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time "Every year," said Southey, "adds to our ample stock of books relating to the manners of other nations, and the condition of men in states and stages of society different from our own; and of such books we cannot have too many." If this be granted, no apology will be needed for the publication of the present volume. The labours of Mr Turnour and Mr Upham in the field of Ceylonese antiquities opened up materials for a continued history of a peculiar Asiatic people for upwards of 2000 years. The progress of that people to refinement, the causes of their decline, and the effects of European interference, cannot, I flatter myself, be without interest to a cultivated mind. The student of human nature will find that the History of Ceylon adds another to the arguments commonly adduced to prove that the character of a people is the natural result of its government, its laws and its religion. I cannot close these remarks without mentioning, that the present volume owes its origin to the advice of the gentleman to whom it is inscribed, and that without his assistance it could not have been completed.
