To settle this ques tion is to put aside much confusion. Is theology the science of religion or is religion the product of theology? Both po sitions are right. Some theological elements, perceived or sensed, are at the beginning of rudimentary religion, and a fuller theology contributes to the perfecting of religion. Again, religion in a measure unconsciously unfolds itself, and incorporates into itself elements from many sources. It thus furnishes, both in its less complete and in its more complete character, material for theology. The theory and the experience react upon and contribute to each other.
