The India-Pakistan-America relationship has never been a settled one. In Avoiding Armageddon, Bruce Riedel explains the challenge and the importance of successfully managing America's affairs with these two emerging powers and their toxic relationship. The fact that India and Pakistan will be among the most important countries in the twenty-first century makes this a pressing concern. Born from the British Raj, the two nations share a common heritage, but they are different in many important ways. India is already the world's largest democracy and will soon become the planet's most populous nation. Pakistan, soon to be the fifth most populous country, has a troubled history of military coups, dictators, and harboring terrorists such as Osama bin Laden. The long-time rivals are nuclear powers, with tested weapons. They have fought four wars with each other and have gone to the brink of war several times. Meanwhile, U.S. presidents since Franklin Roosevelt have been increasingly involved in the region's affairs. In the past two decades alone, the White House has intervened several times to prevent nuclear confrontation in the subcontinent. South Asia clearly is critical to American national security, and the volatile relationship between India and Pakistan is the crucial factor determining whether the region can ever be safe and stable. Full of riveting details of what went on behind the scenes, and based on extensive research and Riedel's role in advising four U.S. presidents on the region, Avoiding Armageddon reviews the history of American diplomacy in South Asia, the crises that have flared in recent years, and the prospects for future crisis. Riedel provides an in-depth look at the Mumbai terrorist attack in 2008, the worst terrorist outrage since 9/11, and he concludes with authoritative analysis on what the future is likely to hold for America and the South Asia puzzle as well as recommendations on how Washington should proceed.

Pakistan's corrupt government banned UN nuclear inspectors and American forces from the country after American Special Forces executed Osama Bin Laden. With UN oversight neutralized, Al-Qaeda breached Pakistan's nuclear weapons storage. When the theft was discovered, the camouflage of Pakistan's leaders was transparent to Eric Ludlow of the CIA, and to America's military Chief of Staff, Admiral Michaels. Ayeza entered a forced marriage when she was twelve and left Pakistan for her husband's village in Afghanistan. Driven from her home by the senior wives when her husband was away, her husband's brother caught her talking to a boy on the street. He and the men he was with killed the boy and gang raped Ayeza. The village imam condemned her in accordance with Islamic law for enticing the rape. An American patrol rescued her as her husband and his family was stoning her in the street. The CIA later recruited her. A theft of nuclear material meant new rules of engagement. Eric Ludlow sent Ayeza back to her village to get the proof. With proof in hand, Ayeza joined with Logan, the CIA's top Middle East operative, in a search for the weapons. When the government of Pakistan denied the theft, the American administration waffled. Unconvinced, America's CIA and its military leaders placed their careers on the line to find the warheads before they reached their targets in the States. After a two year failed search spanning three continents, a successful nuclear attack on an American city by Islam's crusaders appeared imminent. When the Americans executed Osama Bin Laden Al-Qaeda focused on a target, and, a leader for a leader became radical Islam's rallying call. Convinced by Eric and Admiral Michaels that a weapon had arrived, President Gregory Paxton must choose. Would he seek safety for his family and himself and leave the captiol while risking a major city and its entire population, or would he cave in and trade America's freedom by accepting Al-Qaeda's perverted terms for peace, or, would he hold the enemy responsible?

The American FBI, CIA, and, military engaged in joint operations spanning two years and four continents tracking Islamic terrorists who possessed four nuclear weapons taken from the nuclear arsenal of the country of Pakistan. The FBI cornered the terrorists in Virginia. Bombings in Washington were an effort by Al-Qaeda to divert attention from the search and to pave the way for a nuclear bomb to reach Washington DC. Peter Armstrong, the Governor of Virginia ordered the area evacuated while the FBI tried to negotiate surrender. Four hours later, the President of the United States approached the podium. He paused for a moment to look at his watch. When the minute hand settled on the hour, Admiral Stockton gave the order to raise the bombers to the flight deck on the Nimitz, and Captain Taylor on the Nautilus and Captain Jenkins on the Miami opened the missile tubes, We lost three thousand members of our family and friends on 9-11, thirty thousand in Florida, and now our families and friends must deal with a new loss in Virginia. There are a half dozen Muslim communities and twice that many Muslim organizations with a presence in Washington DC. The Justice Department wanted civilian guns off the street. The President concurred. Thirty-five to fifty percent of American households have at least one.. After the President's speech, the local police were under the authority of the Justice Department. Huntington ordered the streets cordoned off and a curfew imposed. The police began a house-by-house search of Georgetown and the District of Columbia. All businesses would remain closed until the search was complete. A second National Guard convoy from Dahlgren, Virginia arrived on the outskirts of the Washington at 10 pm. It was a Saturday night. The streets around the nation's capital should have been busy with traffic transporting people to and from thousands of restaurants normally packed at that time of night. However, the streets were emptying as businesses were closing down. America does not hold the millions of peace loving Muslims around the world responsible. However, America's civilian and military leaders are in accord. We have advised our friends and now we're telling our enemies. Those of us who choose freedom over tyranny will no longer be held hostage by those who hate us, only because we love freedom. We will not spend our prosperity, another ten years, and the lives of more our loved ones chasing this enemy. In the future, we will offer our hand in friendship, or our wrath to our enemies, but our enemies must understand; the free world will no longer be held hostage by a perverted religious ideal.

Before the First World War, the British Admiralty conceived a plan to win rapid victory in the event of war with Germany-economic warfare on an unprecedented scale. This secret strategy called for the state to exploit Britain's effective monopolies in banking, communications, and shipping-the essential infrastructure underpinning global trade-to create a controlled implosion of the world economic system. In this revisionist account, Nicholas Lambert shows in lively detail how naval planners persuaded the British political leadership that systematic disruption of the global economy could bring about German military paralysis. After the outbreak of hostilities, the government shied away from full implementation upon realizing the extent of likely collateral damage-political, social, economic, and diplomatic-to both Britain and neutral countries. Woodrow Wilson in particular bristled at British restrictions on trade. A new, less disruptive approach to economic coercion was hastily improvised. The result was the blockade, ostensibly intended to starve Germany. It proved largely ineffective because of the massive political influence of economic interests on national ambitions and the continued interdependencies of all countries upon the smooth functioning of the global trading system. Lambert's interpretation entirely overturns the conventional understanding of British strategy in the early part of the First World War and underscores the importance in any analysis of strategic policy of understanding Clausewitz's "political conditions of war."

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of American Prometheus comes the first effort to set the Cuban Missile Crisis, with its potential for nuclear holocaust, in a wider historical narrative of the Cold War—how such a crisis arose, and why at the very last possible moment it didn't happen. In this groundbreaking look at the Cuban Missile Crisis, Martin Sherwin not only gives us a riveting sometimes hour-by-hour explanation of the crisis itself, but also explores the origins, scope, and consequences of the evolving place of nuclear weapons in the post-World War II world. Mining new sources and materials, and going far beyond the scope of earlier works on this critical face-off between the United States and the Soviet Union—triggered when Khrushchev began installing missiles in Cuba at Castro's behest—Sherwin shows how this volatile event was an integral part of the wider Cold War and was a consequence of nuclear arms. Gambling with Armageddon looks in particular at the original debate in the Truman Administration about using the Atomic Bomb; the way in which President Eisenhower relied on the threat of massive retaliation to project U.S. power in the early Cold War era; and how President Kennedy, though unprepared to deal with the Bay of Pigs debacle, came of age during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Here too is a clarifying picture of what was going on in Khrushchev's Soviet Union. Martin Sherwin has spent his career in the study of nuclear weapons and how they have shaped our world. Gambling with Armegeddon is an outstanding capstone to his work thus far.

A frightening but necessary assessment of the threat posed by nuclear weapons in the twenty-first century, edited by the world's leading antinuclear activist With the world's attention focused on climate change and terrorism, we are in danger of taking our eyes off the nuclear threat. But rising tensions between Russia and NATO, proxy wars erupting in Syria and Ukraine, a nuclear-armed Pakistan, and stockpiles of aging weapons unsecured around the globe make a nuclear attack or a terrorist attack on a nuclear facility arguably the biggest threat facing humanity. In Sleepwalking to Armageddon, pioneering antinuclear activist Helen Caldicott assembles the world's leading nuclear scientists and thought leaders to assess the political and scientific dimensions of the threat of nuclear war today. Chapters address the size and distribution of the current global nuclear arsenal, the history and politics of nuclear weapons, the culture of modern-day weapons labs, the militarization of space, and the dangers of combining artificial intelligence with nuclear weaponry, as well as a status report on enriched uranium and a shocking analysis of spending on nuclear weapons over the years. The book ends with a devastating description of what a nuclear attack on Manhattan would look like, followed by an overview of contemporary antinuclear activism. Both essential and terrifying, this book is sure to become the new bible of the antinuclear movement—to wake us from our complacency and urge us to action.
