IBM theory is the prediction that people prefer to act in identity-congruent ways but that the identity-to-behavior link is opaque for a number of reasons (the future feels far away, difficulty of working on goals is misinterpreted, and strategies for attaining goals do not feel identity-congruent). The pathways metaphor provides an organizing force, both in addressing variables contributing to illness onset, and in identifying interventions to restore health. This approach will guide the clinician to understanding how people become ill and the types of interventions that are appropriate for stress related illnesses. The clinician will also become better informed about ways to help clients make better decisions, mobilize clients’ survival skills, and implement an interactive model of care. The book includes chapters on stress-related illnesses with high prevalence in today’s society. For each illness, the genetic-psychobiological etiology is explored with enough detail so that the clinician understands the best method of patient assessment and treatment. One of the strengths of the book is the step-wise system of interventions that are applied to the stress-related illnesses. Beginning with re-establishment of normal daily psychobiological rhythms and continuing to evidence based state of the art interventions, the professional is presented with detailed intervention plans. For example, the section on "Applications to common illnesses: metabolic disorders of behavior: diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia" considers the confluence of genetics, behavior, and maladaptive mind body interactions to produce the metabolic syndrome. Finally, multilevel interventions are formulated for these disorders. The plan begins with clinician guided self care recommendations to re-establish the normal rhythm of appetite and satiety. Born in the copper mining town of Chingola, Chisanga was educated at Kabulonga Boys' School in Lusaka and Sir William Borlase School in Marlow, England. He read law at the Universities of Birmingham and London before proceeding to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University. As a practising lawyer in Zambia Chisanga represented both corporate and human rights clients opposed to the one party dictatorship that lasted from 1972 to 1991. Chisanga ran the Chekwe Consultancy in Canada from 1989 to 1994 advising clients (including governments) on international development and public policy. He served as Chair and CEO of the Ontario Criminal Injuries Compensation Board from 1994 to 1997 when he became Executive Director of Oxfam Canada. Chisanga returned to the private sector to serve as Zambia Country Manager for a Canadian mining company in 2008. A year later he was named Ontario's Deputy Minister for Citizenship and Immigration. Chisanga retired from the Ontario government in 2015. In addition to being president of the Masomo Education Foundation, Chisanga is a senior fellow at Massey College, University of Toronto. He recently co-founded a solar energy company whose first subsidiary is in Zambia'. Chisanga is the author of the books, An Election to Remember (1996), Getting Zambia to Work (2011), Cobra in the Boat: Michael Sata's Zambia (2017) and Staying Ahead: Due Dilligence in Residence and Citizenship by Investment Programmes (2018).
