Art and cultural production in Egypt during much of the last hundred years has operated against a backdrop of political crisis and confrontation. Patrick Kane focuses on the turbulent changes of the 1920s to 1960s, when polemical discourse and artistic practice developed against the entrenched and co-opted conservatism of elite and state culture. Radical forms of cultural criticism and dissonance emerged, and this legacy continues to resonate through contemporary activism and dissent. Kane charts the rise of key art movements, like the Egyptian Surrealists and the Contemporary Art Group, and explores their resistance to the Nahda paradigm of elite culture, as well as Nasser's state authoritarianism and nationalist agenda. Through the work of artists and critics like Abd al-Hadi al-Gazzar and Gamal al-Sagini, Kane provides rare insight into the Egyptian cultural and aesthetic experience, and how it has been shaped within a context of political and social conflict.

Do you consider yourself to be a successful leader, or do you aspire to be so? If so then this book is for you. Do you wish to lead your teams in the most effective and energising way? Are you a follower seeking to be well led? Are you in the business of helping others to improve their performance? If you answer yes to any of these questions then you'll find much to help you in these pages. From the authors own practical experience, from his observation of other leaders and from his wide research he found that people who have become highly respected usually display the eight characteristics described within the inspiring leadership philosophy. Employing these qualities is how they manage to get others to follow them willingly. You could do the same. A coaching client, Sarah Jane Mills, who critically reviewed a draft of this book, described the benefits as follows: "This is a fresh approach to leadership and it is named perfectly. It brings together a wealth of different ideas and concepts under a very clear and simple set of 8 principles. This is about leadership based on relationship. It gives people permission to be inspiring leaders. You can analyse your own strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats using the compass and you will be given a set of tools to develop your skill so you become a better inspiring leader. If you focus on these principles you will affect others in a highly positive way."

How the treatment of sexual consent in erotic fanfiction functions as a form of cultural activism. Sexual consent is--at best--a contested topic in Western societies and cultures. The #MeToo movement has brought public attention to issues of sexual consent, revealing the endemic nature of sexual violence. Feminist academic approaches to sexual violence and consent are diverse and multidisciplinary--and yet consent itself is significantly undertheorized. In Dubcon, Milena Popova points to a community that has been considering issues of sex, power, and consent for many years: writers and readers of fanfiction. Their nuanced engagement with sexual consent, Popova argues, can shed light on these issues in ways not available to either academia or journalism. Popova explains that the term "dubcon" (short for "dubious consent") was coined by the fanfiction community to make visible the gray areas between rape and consent--for example, in situations where the distribution of power may limit an individual's ability to give meaningful consent to sex. Popova offers a close reading of three fanfiction stories in the Omegaverse genre, examines the "arranged marriage" trope, and discusses the fanfiction community's response when a sports star who was a leading character in RPF (real person fiction) was accused of rape. Proposing that fanfiction offers a powerful discursive resistance on issues of rape and consent that challenges dominant discourses about gender, romance, sexuality, and consent, Popova shows that fanfiction functions as a form of cultural activism.
