"Pavel of Poland” is set in WW II, 1943-1947. Pavel, who helps his grandfather farm and is married to Magda, is swept away with Jews of his town and taken to Auschwitz. Pavel endures horrors, hard work and starvation. He and friend Tomas, captured similarly, survive to early 1945, escape and walk across Poland finding many kind farmers who help them. And two horrific scenes of man’s depravity that shape Pavel’s life. Meanwhile Magda, assuming Pavel is lost, marries Stan, and they have twin girls. Pavel needs Stan to stay until Pavel regains his strength. The two men are able to forgive each other. Tomas’ home has been destroyed, and he comes to Pavel for help. This allows Pavel to pursue studying in Krakow toward teaching or writing. There he finds Tanya, Tomas’ missing wife. Pavel and Tanya return to Pavel’s farm for a happy reunion for Tomas and Tanya.

This book attempts to discover the names of the first Polish settlers in Illinois, when they came to Illinois and their stories when possible. Some left complete stories about themselves while others only a very small amount. The time period starts in 1818, the year Illinois became a state and ends in 1850. I found much more information between 1818 and 1850 then I thought I would so I cut the book off at 1850. The Polish settlers are divided into five different categories. 1. Polish Political Exiles from Russia. 2. Polish emigrants from mainly German occupied Poland. 3. Polish Jews. 4. People of Polish descent, those persons with a Polish ancestor. 5. Emigrants from an undetermined county whose last names look Polish.

Imperial Russian Rule in the Kingdom of Poland, 1864–1915 investigates in detail the imperial bureaucracy’s highly variable relationship with Polish society over the next half century. It portrays the personnel and policies of Russian domination and describes the numerous layers of conflict and cooperation between the Tsarist officialdom and the local population. Presenting case studies of both modes of conflict and cooperation, Malte Rolf replaces the old, unambiguous “freedom-loving Poles vs. oppressive Russians” narrative with a more nuanced account and does justice to the complexity and diversity of encounters among Poles, Jews, and Russians in this contested geopolitical space. At the same time, he highlights the process of “provincializing the center,” the process by which the erosion of imperial rule in the Polish Kingdom facilitated the demise of the Romanov dynasty itself.
