Excerpt from Penn's Treaty With the Indians In this book is narrated, as our fathers transmitted it to their children, the story of the Treaty, the Founder of our State made with the Aborigines, at Shackamaxon. To its pledges his children and his followers were true; unbrokenly for generations. We preserve its memory, sacred in act and spirit in our generation, "so that his and our posterity will be as a long chain of which he was the first link, and when one link ends another succeeds and then another, being all firmly bound together in one strong chain to endure for ever." Two Centuries have passed away since it was made, "but these are but a few years and like as yesterday in the life of a nation; nevertheless, following that Great Man's peaceable Councils, this government has now become wealthy and powerful in Great Numbers of People." Excerpt from A Memoir on the History of the Celebrated Treaty Made by William Penn With the Indians Under the Elm Tree at Shackamaxon: In the Year 1682 Reflecting on this document, the Committee were induced to inquire into the whole history of the great Treaty, which they found involved in much doubt and obscurity, principally from the want of cotemporary records, in consequence of which popular notions have crept in amidst the various tradi tions that have been received from our ancestors, and the partial efforts that have been made by curious inquirers to remove the doubts, and clear up the obscurity, by means of insulated documents which have been discovered from time to time, have been attended only with partial success, and sometimes have failed of their object, by inducing erroneous notions, arising from the misapplication of those documents, or false inferences drawn from them. One hundred years have passed, and what wonderful progress has been witnessed in art and science. Little did benjamin west think that the great picture on which he had bestowed months of labor could, in that lapse of time, be reproduced by human ingenuity in so perfect a manner. For a few moments the sun was made to look upon it in his brightness, when a child was born from the contact that, you will presently see, has a most marvel ous resemblance to the father-picture. Subject: Historical print depicting a seaside encounter between American colonists and Native Americans. A group of natives crowds around two young colonists, who kneel at the center of the image with a roll of cloth. Behind them, William Penn stands with a large sheet of paper in his left hand. In the right foreground is a large wooden chest; in the left, a bow and quiver of arrows. Sailors unload cargo from ships on the sea in the right background. Behind the central figures, the main street of a colonial town rises up beside Indian tents.

Excerpt from A Bibliography of the English Colonial Treaties With the American Indians: Including a Synopsis of Each Treaty Many of the records of the Various treaties With the Indians exist only in manuscript; some have been printed in the Journals of the Governors and Councilsor in the Votes and Proceedings of the legislative bodies; while others were separately printed. It is the object of this monograph to locate and describe such as Were separately printed. A very brief synopsis of the contents of each treaty is given, and also the loca tion of copies in the principal libraries and private collections. It is quite probable that they were printed in very small editions, Which would account for their rarity at the present time. That they are rare is dem onstrated by the fact that only one public library in the country contains one-third of the number of titles re corded in this monograph, while thirteen titles are known by only a single copy. And of two no copy is known to exist in America. To see the ones described it has been necessary to Visit the various libraries in Boston, Worcester, New York, Philadelphia, and Chi cago. Seventeen public libraries and seven private collections have been examined and the copies located in them are recorded herein.
