Excerpt from Philosophy War It is but just, also, to state that the Germans themselves regard the war as the culmination of their philosophy. It would none the less be wholly out of place to render the German philosophers of the past responsible for the use which is now being made of their doctrines. The same thoughts, said Pascal, do not always grow and develop in others as they do in their creator. Though the categorical imperative of Kant is at the present time advanced as proof that cruelty ceases to be cruelty when practised on behalf of German discipline, manifestly a like misinterpretation of his ideas cannot be imputed to Kant himself. Excerpt from The Reformation of War Philosophy is a love of wisdom, and wisdom is the power of forming the fittest judgments from whatever premises are under consideration. Philosophy is, therefore, an evolutionary system of thought which has as its Objective the survival of the fittest thoughts. While animals progress through the struggles of body, humankind, as distinct from animals, progresses through the struggles Of mind, but with this difference: that, while in animal life every unit must struggle in order to sur vive, in human life the struggles of one great brain will, on occasion, remould an epoch. We find, therefore, that human beings may be divided into two categories-the masters (super men) and the slaves (super-monkeys); in fact, into creators and imitators. This has always been so, and is likely to remain so, for without the second there can be no opposition to the first, and opposition is the manure of progress, and progress, seemingly, is of the will of God. If the aim Of wisdom is to arrive at the fittest judgments, then, indeed, is common-sense the true philosophy of life. To do the most appropriate thing at any moment is what is generally known as a common-sense act in other words, common-sense may be defined as: thought and action adapted to Circum stances. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Conflict: And Other Essays in War-Time When we glance at a map of the world, the eye catches its large firm outlines and passes over as negligible that broken corner of a great continental mass which we call Europe. Yet let us look more closely. Then we may realise that what at first had seemed the jagged and half-melted edge of a continent is really a delicately and artfully carved piece of work such as we find nowhere else on the whole design outspread before us. We realise that the artist who made the world, elsewhere content, on the whole, to mould huge masses or great blank spaces, has here used his finest graver and brooded with his most loving smile over the minute configuration of land and water, so as to achieve the maximum of harmonious diversity with the elimination of all extremes in a temperate region sheltered from the withering blasts of the South and the icy devastation of the North, bathed by the warm and yet stimulating currents of air and ocean. We search in vain for any similar achievement of art among the blank oceans of the world, its vast barren plains, its oppressive mountain masses. Excerpt from The Philosophy of War But the impelling Force which caused the Outgoing or downward arc of the projection into Manifestation resists the Indrawing power or upward arc of Realization which is necessary to complete the At-one-ment. This resistance to the uplifting, dematerial izing and indrawing force constitutes and isthe basic principle back of all reflections or phases of the War. In the physical world this resistance is expressed as the war between Spirit and Matter; the resistance due to the density and inertia of Matter to the unfold ment and expression of the Spirit which, with the descent of the Light, clothed itself in Matter that it might evolve up through it and by so doing spiritualize it and return it to its primordial state. It is the inability of the lower Vibrations of Matter to respond to the higher vibrations of Spirit until, through the subliming and etherializing process which results from the friction thus engendered, Matter becomes finer and more plastic and thus more responsive to the expressions of Spi1it. Hence in all cosmogonies, 'there were many Wars, ' all referring to the strug gles of adjustment, spiritual, cosmical and astronomical, but chiefly to the mysteries of the evolution of man, as he is now.2 The point we wish to emphasize 13 that these wars are all necessary factors in the ad justment which must occur ere the close of any and every cycle.
