Excerpt from Pictures and Stories From Uncle Tom's Cabin Oh missus! Dear missus! Don't think me nu grateful; don't think hard of me. I am going to try to save my boy; you will not blame me! God bless and reward you for all your kindness! Hastily folding and directing this, she went to a drawer and made up a little package of clothing for her boy, which she tied firmly round her waist; and so fond is a mother's remembrance, that even in the terrors Of that hour she did not forget to put up in the little package one or two of his favour ite toys. On the bed lay her slumbering boy, his long curls falling negligently around his unconscious face, his rosy mouth half Open, his little fat hands thrown out over the bed-clothes, and a smile spread like a sunbeam over his whole face. Poor boy! Poor fellow! Said Eliza, they have sold you, but your mother will save you yet. It was some trouble to arouse the little sleeper; but after some effort he sat up, and began playing with his wooden bird, while his mother was putting on her bonnet and shawl. Well, then, let her tell you how this story came into the world. Long before it was ever written down at all, it was told to a circle of children, and then, as fast as it was told to them, it was written down; and there was a great deal of laughing and crying among these children, you may be sure, and a great deal of hurrying that it might be got through with. So you see the story belongs to children very properly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Visit to Uncle Tom's Cabin Ate in the month of August, 1892, I decided to make a visit to the old plantation in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, where I knew the original Uncle Tom's Cabin was still standing, just as it stood the day that the old slave died the tragic death that has been accorded him. And knowing that it was situated in the Southern portion of the parish, some twenty miles from the parish site Natchitoches, I decided to'go first to that place and ascertain from the Records of Deeds and whatever else I could find, something more of the authenticity of the story, it being my purpose, in case I could establish the fact that it was the real cabin, to make such terms as might be made with the owner of it, and then remove it to Chicago, where it would be placed upon exhibition during the World's Fair to be held in that city in 1892 and 1893. In accordance with this plan I arrived at the old town of Natchitoches, situated on the west bank of the Red river, on the morning of the 3oth day of August.
