Excerpt from The Old Story Books of England: Illustrated With Twelve Pictures by Eminent Artists Guy resolving not to stand doting at a distance, went to Warwick Castle where Felice dwelt, she being daughter and heiress to Roband Earl of Warwick. The Earl, her father, hearing of Guy's coming, bade him heartily welcome, and prepared to entertain him with a match of hunting, but he to that lent an unwilling ear, and to prevent it feigned himself sick. The Earl, troubled for his friend, sent his own physician to him. The doctor told Guy his disease was dangerous, and without letting blood there was no remedy. Guy replied, a I know my body is distempered; but you want skill to cure the inward inflammation of my heart: Galen's Herbal cannot quote the flower I like for my remedy. There is a flower which if I might but touch would heal me. It is called by a pretty pleasing name, and I think Phielix soundeth something like it." "I know it not," replied the doctor, "nor is there in the Herbal any flower that beareth such a name, as I remember." So saying he departed, and left Guy to cast his eyes on the heavenly face of his Felice, as she was walking in a garden full of roses and other flowers. Excerpt from Old England: Its Scenery, Art, and People I do not profess in these pages to present much that is new or comprehensive in relation to so well known a country as England; but I have striven to draw a faithful though rapid picture of the English portion of the island, going from Tweed mouth to Land's End, touching upon nearly every county, and making the entire circuit of the land. The English Cathedrals have particularly attracted me, and I have loved to linger in their majestic shadows; and for the sake of younger readers, some account has been given of the history and progress of Architecture in England. I have everywhere spoken with the freedom which an American is accustomed to exercise upon all subjects, and yet in no spirit of bitterness or hostility, but, on the contrary, in a spirit of rever ence and love for the great land of our fathers. Excerpt from A Child's History of England; American Notes; Pictures From Italy; Miscellanies In the old days, a long, long While ago, before Our Saviour was born on earth and lay asleep in a manger, these Islands were in the same place, and the stormy sea roared round them, just as it roars now. But the sea was not alive, then, with great ships and brave sailors, sailing to and from all parts of the world. It was very lonely. The Islands lay solitary, in the great expanse of water. The foaming waves dashed against their cliffs, and the bleak winds blew over their forests; but the winds and waves brought no adventurers to land upon the Islands, and the savage Islanders knew nothing of the rest of the world, and the rest of the world knew nothing Of them. It is supposed that the Phoenicians, who were an ancient people, famous for carrying on trade, came in ships to these Islands, and found that they produced tin and lead; both very useful things, as you know, and both produced to this very hour upon the sea-coast. The most celebrated tin mines in Cornwall are, still, close to the sea. One of them, which I have seen, is so close to it that it is hollowed out underneath the ocean; and the miners say, that in stormy weather, when they are at work down in that deep place.
