I feel that my poems will make you feel sad and happy at times and some will make you laugh and then others will make you sit back and think. Some of the poems were written to describe various travel adventures, whereas others describe specific landmarks that were of interest. Many are just whimsical subjects that would pop into my mind as I was trying to go to sleep. Rather than counting sheep, I would compose a poem and hope that I would remember it in the morning so I could put the words on paper in poetic form. There is one epic poem on the Battle of Chancellorsville and one on Stonewall Jackson’s death and several Irish poems. As I said earlier, this is an eclectic collection. I have enjoyed writing them, and I hope you enjoy reading them.

Readers of this book will discover amazing variety, not only in themes, but also in poetic style. Lydia herself invented a three-syllable line of carefree verse that she employed in her "August Love in Tennessee". Her poems are a veritable visual feast much like a painting, owing to her adroit use of descriptive terms. The author has mastered the art of poetic storytelling, as well. We witness the character of five individuals unfold in a three-page poem. See "A Mother's Quilt". Lydia's poems are decidedly upbeat and reflect the joyful hope that characterizes her life as a Christian.

Throughout her life the poet found that many people shy away from poetry. They say they don’t like it; they don’t understand it; they are afraid of it. Poetry is as popular as a rattlesnake. The poet studied poetry in high school and college and has written poetry for fifty years. Naturally, one’s mind and heart grow and change over time. All of us evolve. The poet certainly has, and still does. In reading the oldest poems written, there is a young girl’s innocence in some, yet a remarkable maturity and wisdom in others. Poems are not differentiated as to age when written. Surely the reader may be able to do that, but maybe not. Poetry is what one wants it to be. This poetry is not written in any accepted or expected style. Rather, it was written purely for the poet herself. She wrote as a method of sharing thoughts, experiences, dreams, images, senses, feelings, memories. Some recollections were her own, and some belong to those who shared theirs with her. Some poems are mental exercises woven onto paper, while others are dreams caught before the poet truly woke. Her writing may not be poetry, but it is honest, and it is authentic. Poetry is what you want it to be. If you feel it, it is real. Just read aloud from line to line just as you would a book. It’s not fancy, it’s Potpourri.
